Alert: Attack could spur county pit-bull ban, NM Santa Fe & Contacts

By Julie Ann Grimm The New Mexican
    April 12, 2006

As an 11-year-old Edgewood boy remains hospitalized with dog-bite injuries, Santa Fe County commissioners are planning to hear from experts about whether they should pass laws aimed at preventing such an attack in the future.

County Commissioner Michael Anaya, who represents the southern district on the commission, said at Tuesday’s regular meeting that he wants the county to look at banning pit-bull breeding or some other measure to address dog attacks.

“To me, pit bulls are very vicious, and you read about this in the paper every couple of months that a pit bull has attacked a child. It’s very serious to me,” Anaya said.

The city of Denver renewed a ban on the breed last year and had first banned the dogs in 1989. Anaya said he wants to hear from an expert on whether Santa Fe County should do the same. Commissioner Virginia Vigil agreed that she’d like to hear from someone on the topic, but hesitated to support a breed-specific ban.
