OK not a pleasant subject but I need advice from all of you out there. This is the second time we have had a problem with our female's anal glands. The vet is giving steroids, antibiotics and if needed pain pills. We go in for our first check up on Wednesday and then again 7 days after that. He is going to show us how to “glove” up and “milk” these glands every two to three weeks. Does anyone else out there have this problem with his or her pit? If so please PM me with your solution. Thanks, Sisu<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Had that problem with a Pug. And I would have rather drained them than to have them leaking everywhere. Had to do it about every 2 to 3 months. Never had to medicate though. Good luck.

Had a problem with a Great Dane, They were not in the right place and would not drain sufficently. I had them surgically removed. It was a little bit of money, she was only a year old, I did not want to live with it. She lived to be 11. Anal glands are useless other then to lay down their own scent when they use the bathroom. The more they are expressed the more they fill up. And why couldn't God make them smell like lavender?

Some dogs need them expressed by us, but usually it's the small dogs that have issues. The anal glands are supposed to empty themselves when the dog has a hard stool. The stool will push against the sacs on it's way out, 'causing them to express. But sometimes either the stool is not hard (dogs with IBD, chronic colitis, etc), the have food allergies which are making expressing themselves difficult, or they have a physical issue with them.

Expressing them isn't too bad, you just have to get used to it. And be sure to step far enough back because if that juice splatters on you you'll be stinking for weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You lift the tail and feel around the outside of his anus. You should feel small sacs, give them a gentle squeeze and as Sis sais Back the heck Up!!!It is the most noxious odor in the WORLD.

Also like she said smaller dogs are very east, if you have a bigger dog you may need your vet to help you out. Good Luck

9. They need to make a little barfing smily...just for this thread!

My sister had a small dog, a chihuahua, whose anal gland abcessed and burst. She had a regular old hole next to the regular hole, if ya know what I mean. She had to go on antibiotics for that. Seems to me only fat dogs have trouble expressing them. I guess dogs who are muscular back there could too. Any of them that have trouble with licking themselves in that area. None of my big dogs ever had any problems. Does she drag her butt on the ground?

Odds are that if you're around dogs for long enough, sooner or later you'll experience a swollen anal gland or two. The smell of the "expression" is worse than that of ten decaying corpses in a one-corpse coffin.

You can usually tell when they need a little squeeze when the glands are swollen to the point of causing the dog some obvious discomfort. Often they'll drag their ass across the floor/ground.
You can use some kind of rag for the pinch, but I don't think a paper towel will cut it, lol.

LMAO I thought that was perfect. :D

Wish I could make smilies... though I have been looking into it and it doesn't look that hard. But i will keep looking around and see what else i can find.

Sisu -- hope you found a solution for you dog issue. I know that can be a pain in the ass (no pun intended ;) ) I had that problem with a keeshound but he went to the groomers weekly and they always expressed them there. Good luck with your pooch.
