    I wouldn't mind spending $1000 - $1200. But that's it!

when I read 1000$ that really doesn't look like a lot to me lol.
most pure bred dogs around here are sold around that amount in puppy mills and other BYBs.
health tested show stock is usually sold around 1600$ (1200€) (like amstaffs and such)

I tend to think that in comparision to our regular prizes (about 800€ up to 1200€) my dog was cheap at 600€... lol :D

    anyways, good luck to you!

I've had 2 Dogo's and they are no joke. If you're going to throw one into the mix be prepared if either dog would challenge the other.
Dogos are very tenacious. There is some extreme bloodlines in the country that have come direct from Argentina. I always dealt with Maureen from Fairtex kennels in FL.

Also check here for rescues and on petfinder.

    There is a lot of:
    De Los Medanos
    De La Vieja
    De El Tumi
    De Hiras
    Del Huaico

You just got to do some research and find it.

Hey thx bigboy. I'll check it out!

You like the breed, I take it? Did you ever have a problem with either of them being overly territorial (guarding what doesn't need to be guarded) or anything? Sorry if this is a stupid question...I'm kind of stupid lol j/k but the only guardian breed I've ever had was a GSD so I really don't have any personal experience to help me.

    Thx all!

    I wouldn't recomend a dogo...

I've owned one and talked with plenty of breeders in the past. Unless your looking for a CONSTANT challange.

Think the stuborness of a bulldog, muliplied 30 X.

That was the biggest thing I noticed about MY Dogo at least, If she WANTED to do something, she was going to. I took my dogo from puppy kinder garten through advanced obedience, and that dog was almost ROBOTIC in the way it took commands, IF she knew you could check her. IE, take her off leash, and BOOM SHE KNEW she didn't have to listen. Take her "pinch collar" off and she'd pull like a MANIAC at the leash, no matter how you checked her flat collar or choker. Put the pinch collar on, and you could walk her at a perfect heal with out touching the leash.

SUPER intelligent dog. I had to deal with Dog aggression, and I PERSOANLLY got challanged by her multiple times through her adolesent stage. If I hadn't been in good physical shape, or if I were a smaller person, she woulda ripped me up. Once the dominance issue was settled in adolesence though, she was as human friendly as you could EVER ask a dog to be. It was just ever single step was a CHALLANGE. She didn't have that "desire to please" I see in the APBT's and most other dogs. I've trained most of my APBT with nothing but "praise" no treats, no rewards besides my praise. That would NEVER have worked for the DOGO, she could care less if I was happy or mad at her. She only responded to positive reinforcement with treats and toys.

The only way we ever found to negitively disciplin her was to verbally correct her, SHOW her a treat, and then make her watch you PUT IT BACK in the container. SERIOUSLY The bitch figured out quick that when I was mad, she LOST food.

I mean I have NEVER had more of a challenge training a dog.

Get an AM Bull. Especially if you go through a good breeder, you can find a nice ambull that looks similar a dogo and will be 1000X easier to train. AND I still think My Am Bull's been hard to train compared to all the APBT's I've ever owned. and they are INFINETLY cheaper. If the $3000 a dogo costs seems steep. don't even THINK about getting a cheap one!

P.S. I don't listen to a word all these Jackasses say about never being able to leave an APBT with another dog. I'm not saying everyone should do it. But I had my CH. Vengeance dog, that I left loose with his NEPHEW and a MINI DOXI every day.

I have pictures (SOMEWHERE) of 3 -4 PIT DOGS sitting on my couch with me!

If your dog is well trained, he will know the right and wrong times to 'FIRE UP', although a CHALLANGE, is pretty much all it takes.

My house dog used to walk my chain spots with me every day as I fed the yard. Nothing EVER happened.

I Owned Red Tides Crash, and I'd like SOMEONE to tell me he wasn't a GAME DOG, he'd sleep on my bed with my Vendetta bitch and her son. I didn't get CRASH untill he was around 9, so I didn't have years of training behind him, and he figured out that on MY YARD, nothing goes down. It was a place to hang and play.

I think most of these jack asses who say you cant keep them together just have stupid CHAIN DUMB dogs who recieved NO training ever. They dont know enough to walk on a leash, how can you expect them to do ANYTHING you want???

Put the time in, and you can leave them together. Now I'm not going to lie and act like it was some utopia with all the pitbulls running around together. it still took carefull management and work to get everyone to understand the rules.

I hate that generalization, I've NEVER listened to it, and I've owned some damn fine bulldogs.

I also think having dogs that arn't well trained enough to interact with normal dogs in public are a detriment to the breed. Own 6-8 good dogs, and put more time into them. you'll get better results as far as I'm concerned then keeping a giant yard that only gets fed. If you can walk a BOX DOG in public and let it sniff a normal dogs ass, how the heck can anyone then tell you that dog is dangerous???

I think if more dog men followed that rule, we'd have less BSL, and better F'ing dogs...

Sorry for the ramble, just MY $.02

Thanks MinuteMan! Good post and thanks for the info! To be honest, I hadn't heard anything about Dogos being overly difficult to train. It is definitely good to know. Boss has been a bit of a challenge for me, but not because he's not very eager to please, he's just a dominant dog and I'd never really had an overly dominant dog before.

But yeah, I will take that into consideration before purchasing a new dog. I really don't want to have a dog that is a CONSTANT struggle to work with. A challenge is fine by me, but I certainly don't want to be pulling my hair out:p

I've never been a huge fan of AB's, to be honest. But I've never owned one so I can't say I don't like them. Someone on here actually sent me a link for a female Dogo that is available for adoption. I e-mailed them but have still not had a response. So I kept searching and I found another young bully mutt available (they think AB / Presa Canario but just guessing) so I have been in contact with that rescue regarding him. I may go visit him in the next couple of weeks just to check it out and see what kind of shape he's in.

Although I just made the statement that I WOULD let males stay free together.

I would NEVER purposefully aquire a SECOND male to be a companion to the first.

If you want them to get along well throughout thier lives, get a female, best off a young female...

Just a WAY better chance of them getting along.

    IMO

I also got my Dogo back in 1992, at the time it was one of the first US born litters I had heard about. So maybe the dogs have changed up here, but the parents to my bitch were both Argentinian imports...

Just telling you my experience, take it as a single story to counterbalance the "perfect dog" stories I'm sure you'll hear.

    Regards,

I'm not disagreeing, however, my dog gets along well with both male and female dogs. My dog is neutered and so is this young male. I have been advised by the rescue that he is very dog friendly (they were a little surprised) and is submissive with other dogs larger AND smaller than him (I will need to see this for myself, of course). We shall see!

how old is the young male you're talk about? That will have more to do with it than him being neutered? You may have already answered this but how old is your bulldog? I have a submissive dog that will when pushed will turn on and doesnt have an off button. Keep that in mind. MinuteMan, awesome post! I have some that get along and some that dont. Even the ones that get along get into scrapes over food, toys and most recently a fuckin stick!People that arent experienced handlers do need to be cautious with how they handle multiple dogs. OB training is very important IMO. Especially since you dont do much else with a pup, thats the best kind've work they can get. My dogs have always done better with small dogs. Prob bc they dont see as much of a challenge. I might recommend a smaller breed rather than 2 dogs that might have an issue one day. However, if you are up to the challenge im sure you can make it work:)

    That would be my suggestion...

A small dog. I've NEVER had a bulldog go after a small dog... Just havn't, i'm SURE it's happened, just not to me.

It's great that a YOUNG male is submissive, BUT so was one of the best roll dogs I've ever seen, untill over 3 yo...

So just becasue a young male is submissive, doesn't mean ANYTHING. I'd be much more comfortable if you were saying he's 5 yo...

I'd personally suggest a young female PUPPY, or an ADULT not an adolescent. Take your boy to the shelter/breeder/rescue, and bring toy's food, etc.

If your dog has aggression issues over food, I'd address that before finding him a "friend". You wanna make sure if your leaving them together, your dog doesnt decide the crumb he found on the floor is food worth fighting over.

Also, if the TRUE goal is to find him a friend, why are you worried about WHAT type of dog it is? It seems like REALLY, "YOU" want another BULLY breed, and you think it would be great for him to have a friend. Sounds the same, but two different scenerio's.

If it's truely ALL about him, find a very submissive, non-bully female... And have SOOOOO much less worries.

    :D
