I am a huge nerd, so I obsessively watch this show. It is identical to "biological" combat sports (chicken, canine, human, fish, what have you) except that the contestants aren't alive and it is a hell of a lot more violent. E.g., the robots tear off their opponents' limbs, shoot fire at each other, saw each other in half, send opponents' heads flying off the arena walls, et cetera. The spectators are essentially Ancient Romans, particularly the kids. Facing off, releasing, pinning into the corner, finding and exploiting opponents' weaknesses, scoring, counting out, handling, campaigning, building up the bots for the match, interaction within each pit team, coming from the bottom to win, may have folks feeling nostalgic. Look for "battlebots Minotaur", "battlebots warhead" and "BattleBots tombstone" (yeah -- Tombstone) on YouTube for some of the hardest bots to beat.

I think bot combat may be an acquired taste but once one acquires it, it is highly addictive. Tombstone up there is both the most dreaded bot and the one to try to beat. So far in three seasons it has only lost one match and it won the championship last season.

 

They still have this shit? I ain't seen it in over 15 years probably

 

IIRC it was on like a 12-year hiatus before ABC bought it for the 6th and 7th seasons. Science Channel currently is showing the 8th season.
