Just got my pup back yesterday after a 5 month separation. I just want to know, how can I get him to lose weight fast, but healthily as well. I don't have a scale but my guess is he is around 75lbs. I want him down to about 50 or 55. The lady who was feeding him was not only feeding him a million milk bones everyday, but she was feeding him enough food to sustain a large dog, such as a doberman (my moms is 100 lbs and eats what she gave jace) and it wasn't good food either. Not complaining too much, worse things could have happened, just want to get him back to normal. I mean I can't even feel his ribs without REALLY pressing down. I know the first step, good food. But how much? I'm feeding a little bit of raw (has never had it and didn't particularly care for the pork chop I gave him earlier) and good canned food. Tonight I gave about 1/3 lb hamburg raw, 1/2 can EVO, 1/3 cup yogurt and some chopped up lettuce. For the rest of the week I have the other half can, wellness core and merrick puppy plate. I always only give 1/2 can each day so that won't change. But anyway haha, I have 3lbs chicken or so in the freezer and more veggies. Should I get more for him for the week? Should I be feeding what his normal weight should be getting, or is less ok? I don't want him to be hungry by any means, but we know how dogs are, eat eat eat eat eat. Anyway, helpful comments of course are welcome! Please :-)

Also, how much exercise should he get? Right now, he reminds me of a bully... he can't walk 1/4 mile without panting like crazy. He does want to play I just don't want to over do it I don't want him hurt. Today for example we did prob 3/4 to 1 mile in morning then another 1/3 tonight, and this morning and tonight he played fetch and jump for the toy(flirt pole without the pole lol) for about 15-20 min each. Can I safely add more? He is just so unhealthy, iv never had a fat dog haha

if your dog is that over weight you really shouldnt have him jumping for anything also the flirt pole for a dog that cant walk a 1/4 mile without panting and is that over weight is a recipe for a injury as well. i think alot of handwalking till your dog loses the weight is the safest thing along with proper diet

Bg, I said iv never had a fat dog, I know perfectly well how much to feed a normal sized dog. Sorry I'm not an expert and just wanted a little advice.

Thanks mike916, I thought maybe a little wouldn't hurt, the jumping is only a few jumps I didn't mean the whole time lol. But thanks for the advice! About how long do you think it will take?

Reduce his feed intake a little and increase his work load gradually!

It is the warm months, decrease his feed and let him naturally come down with him being a pup. With being a pup he is active and won't slow down like most pups but a 55 pup damn that is a biggin! He will work his weight off nothing more than feeding him the correct amount, you don't have to do raw and all that to bring him down. Good kibble, fresh water and a chain spot near other dogs will get him down fast and if you have the time walk the dog or flirt pole him. Without all that, he can loose that baby fat quite easily with just decreasing his food to safe amount, a good kibble should be around 3 cups give or take a cup depending on his activity level. Feeding dogs a little heavier as pups never hurts them but being obese is unexceptable for a performance dog.

Picasso, thanks for the advice but, I don't want to feed kibble, I would prefer raw. Especially when for me its cheaper in the long run than a good quality feed. And I said pup, but he is over a year. Still puppy status to me. I was just guessing what his weight should be, at about 9 months he was only 35lbs. I also don't have multiple dogs on chain spots I have a kennel for him, I don't own my own house so a million bulldogs isn't an option yet haha.

If he was 35 at 9 months he shouln't be anywhere 55 lbs let alone 75.

Dream I'm just guessing he's around 75, he is a bit heavier than the 55lb dog I had, but I figure 55 is a lot better than what he is.

Meno I do have a few, just look up jace in the pics forum, there are hundreds haha from when he was little and "jace is back" are pics from 2 days ago. I can't upload from my phone. I don't think anyway lol
