Big Yard vs Small Yard

Just looking to hear some thoughts on big/small yards, pros vs cons. Obviously with an bigger yard you have more prospects, but with that comes more costs, time, space.... With an smaller yard fewer resources are needed and more one on one time can be used to condition each individual dog to suite them. I understand these trade off's and wonder if time, money, space was not an issue than what would be your ideal situation?

This includes no nagging neighbors and spouses.

 

Ideally, Both..at two separate locations.

I have the land to have a big yard..However i just decided to down size, Big-time ! I have enjoyed 25-30 Bulldogs i must say .
I have made my mind up to put alot more time into my work...As bulldogs have always been a hobby. I have 5 bulldogs now. Im able to give them alot more attention and they are happier Bulldogs.
To each his own. I want to stay around 10 for a few years. Also i have also put my #1 hobby on old too ! Drag Racing.
I am also a grandaddy now, So in the big picture less is more....lol God bless you all ! Dex..

 

I have never had a big yard. 5 was the most i have had.
if space,time,and money was no issue..id maybe have a few more. i can't see me with a large yard.

 

a big yard is paradise believe me .
special when a man like don mayfield is saying about the yard .
a blind one can do the breeding in that yard .
just take one from the left and one from the right

on this moment yard not big as used to be .
(but)very happy that i know what is walking between 20 cable runs (2003)+ some pins
my friend limey brought his whole family over to watch that yard
stil hear him saying to his dad . dad this is a yard lol

 

I think a big yard in terms for testing and evaluating would be nice but a smaller yard for the breeding stock where only the best or those that worked for us in the evaluating yard

 

10 to 15 at the most i dont think i could handle more than that too mucch time and to much feed.

 

10 dogs would be nice... Are you guys with a similar count able to leave on vacation or if something comes up? I would be so damn nervous to let anyone else but me be there to lessen chances of something happening.

 

I've got 11 at the moment, I've got room for 20-30 but I doubt ill ever put that many on my place. The key to answer the question is how much help do you have? You got anybody that you trust that knows about dogs? I'd say best way to go is keep it around 10-15 and know about 4-5 more ppl that have 10-15 and if you've got 4-5 ppl your close to that have 10-15 dogs that's not much different than having a 50+ yard except its lighter on the wallet and you might have time to enjoy a few extra beers

My mom or my grandad is only ppl besides me that feed mine so I can't go anywhere and be gone more than 2-3 days

 

Never thought you'd find peace among a yard of barking dogs huh? lol A large yard is something truly special and if you have access to one do as limey did and just go and walk and watch. Enjoy something that may not be around forever.

Big or small a yard should have its healthy cycle going. By healthy cycle i mean... a yard should have proven brood dogs being bred, dogs going through school or being shown, and dogs that are coming up off proven brood dogs. Size should just amplify this process... IMO, a yard in full swing should have litters every 6 months. Keep the process going keep looking at your dogs and keep progressing. Having lulls in breeding or not having new young prospects coming around can put a damper on things. whether you have 5 dogs or 50 dogs, the point is, the pattern should be the same. Breeding, raising, proving... repeat when necessary lol. The only question is.... what can you afford? money, time, work, privacy wise. How dedicated are you to these dogs? You get several dozen dogs and you will soon find out how dedicated you are. I have a lot of respect for men and women who have maintained large yards for decades upon decades. There is a reason that there are very few people left in that category.

I was just thinking that, I've seen people post 10, or 15-20 or even 30 and I was like well who has the big yard lol. I understand the days of several 200 dog yards are behind us, but big yard to me has to be 75+ to be a "Big" yard. Anything below 40 is a nice size yard but I don't it quite reaches the Big yard status. It's still a lot of work. Hell few years back we had 10-20 pups 2x a year with same 3 gyps being bred once a year.

feed them 6 time's a week everyday same time
best is in the morning before middday
soon as they have eaten its quiet al day .
ful moons are special days lol

Steely your post really hit the spot as to how an yard of any size should be run in my mind. I have a great respect for those that have these dogs, big or small yards, and continue to better the breed. One must really put his/herself before these dogs to achieve an above average level. These dogs start out with everything against them. After reading threads about guys thinking these dogs can run in a pack or dog men with 100+ dogs being stripped from a near lifetime of dedication... My hat is off to those few that maintain the blood and keep em true to their standard.
