I would think it is one of those things that can't be determined. Too many variables.

Sort of like trying to explain why a breeding knocks it out of the park and then the repeat flops.

We made a cross with a Mims bitch to a Kronos male and had 7 dogs that made it to the show, and maybe the best out of the litter ruined his teeth early. 8 for 8 show quality dogs. We repeated the breeding and went 1 for 7.

Sort of an off topic analogy but more so to show variables and how it is hard to duplicate things when breeding dogs.

Just like every other topic in the dogs it is important for us to have the warm fuzzies in the decisions we make.

I agree having healthy dogs is paramount but it does not dictate number of pups. I have seen poorly kept, not so healthy females raise 8+ pups and then the female in pristine condition/health have three.

A bitch only produce x amount of eggs each heat cycle which declines (amount of eggs) as she ages.

So while essentially she only has so many eggs it takes good quality semen to inseminate them all. A male with low motility may only inseminate 1 of let's say 10 eggs a bitch has. So it is important to hit every mark with both the stud and the dam.

    Very true,

Not to hijack the thread but it does make me think of stud fee advertisements:

XXX at stud for $$$$-throws big litters.....

without the disclaimer about how the bitch's egg count factors....

    again, my apologies.
