How do you get your catchdogs to catch at the ear consistently instead of just grabbing up the first part of the hog they can get their mouth on?

All dogs are not good catch dogs, some is genetic and some is the dog . Most catch dogs are genetically ear dogs so they do it by instinct, if your dog doesnt go to the ear he just may not have it . Certain lines carry certain traits , the line that your dogs are from maybe swappers.Bolio dogs make great catch dogs because they are intelligent, athletic and will catch on the ear most of the time, but it all comes down to the individual dog

Ya this is just a question about training. I'm not dumb enough to take a dog that wasn't catching well into the woods, that hog will tree us both!

They learn faster with others. when you start one young they will learn of the older more experienced ones, follow the leader and all that.

How many dogs in your team? If you only have one and you want him to lug he may just have to learn by trial and error, they soon get the drift. Use a cut vest he will need it learning.

unfotunately you are right about trial and error, once they get hit by a boar they will learn, however huntin with more than one catchdog will mean one may not be able to grab the ear, so train them with a younger boar or sow, when you get the hog flipped and dog broke off, put the ear in his mouth, he'll get it

  7. That is what i am doing now CD. I have young Colby Gyp that hit like a freight Train but that game dog in her she sometimes goes for the front legs and takes beating doing it too. She got thrown almost 15-20 ft in the air the other week by a real rank hog and then rolled 2 more times before she grabbed him by the nose and anchored him so I could flip him. She is only 38# too so she really has to put it to them hard. The guys that I hunt with call her Freija Train as her name is Freija. She hit that last boar so hard she knocked him off his feet on impact, he was well over 200# too. She will not stop ever when a hog is in her sights. I think that she fights them because she just likes it! When she seems to not want to fight them anymore she just grabs the ear or nose and shuts them down.

yeah i hate that face grabbin, she will learn the hard way with a big boar with big cutters, experience will do the trick she sounds like a smart one, just familiarizing and having a good time it sounds like

  9. Took her out last night and she hit that fron shoulder high and when i grabbed the hog she let go and locked on the ear and would not come off. Tried to break her off but she pulled the ear off first! She just loves catching them dang hogs!

mine went to the ear naturally, but tends to fight and share and not only holding

  11. I think that she was trying for the ear the 1st time but missed and grabbed what she could. I think she just fights them till she has had enough fun and then lockes them down. She is wagg'n her tail the whole time and just seems to be happy and can't wait to go a gaina and again again! She would kill her self by running too hot if I let her just go and go. For a little dog she has a real rough mouth too. Broke the back leg of one hog with her bite right in front of me any about 4 others on our way to the catch. He still ate good though Nice Barr hog

  12. Went out again this past Sunday and she ran to her 1st long bay about 200yds out and I could tell when she arrived.:D Got there broke her off and she was tied out to a tree and then got off and grabbed the hog by the front leg and broke that dang leg too. Was going to keep that one for a bay pen but had to stick it after she broke his leg. Then another bay started out about 500 or so yrds un hooked her and she ran to it and my buddy said that when she hit she hit right in the throat and just killed it in about 1 min before he could break her off. The hogs were small about 80lbs but she was going all out for like 20 mins in 80* heat with a full kevlar cut/catch vest on and started to run hot. Had to take her and dump her in the creek and smear mud on her and 10 mins later she wanted to go again:dogtongue:...I figured that was enough for one morning and the temp was getting higher by the min. On the walk back to the fourwheeler a big hog over 250# crossed the road in front of me about 200 yds but none of the 8 dogs saw him so we got back without another bay in the heat of the day. Struck 6 hogs and caught 2, the small ones but that is hunting I guess.

good Popper! They're movin now, well they always are, but man its been hard with all the thick thick thorns.we are gonna have to start runnin our routes backwards be cause the wind is starting to come from the North rather than the South. If any of you Hogdoggers out there care to post your hog totals please do so or even pm if you wanna, ill get some good pics or footage, if the mods care not for us to post I think we can still pm, nuthin illegal about what we are involved in, hell ask the feds that pay me to run(not the feds feds) lol...Tejreider, be careful how you train bro, most states have laws that prohibit Hogdoggers from using caught hogs in the pen like that, I would take that off youtube, if its a caught hog in the wild you are free, but once they are caught they are not allowed to be held to cause any harm or danger to them
