I am sitting here looking at a letter and pedigree from Crum telling me that he has a dog he would like to trade (in other words, he wants a dog) who is the closest stud dog to Dibo now that dog X has died.... is Crum chasing dead dogs? Is gurley a respected breeder/dogman? The letter/pedigree is signed and dated from '76.

 

Y every time someone disagrees with you you try an act like your the only one with an education ive been noticing alot of your post do have alot to do with not checkin the dogs i mean ya if you wanna be just a paper breeder then sure you might get something here or there MAYBE the point is dont try and say its alright to breed dogs without checking them or you might as well get you some Staffs because in a couple generations of doing that thats all you will really have anyways.

 

Well if the dog wasnt checked it shouldnt have been bred. And NO BODY should be above checking their stock i dont care who it is you aint just ever gonna be able to just look at a dog and say Ya he looks game i'm gonna breed him to this bitch cause thats just retarded.

 

I'm going with its a crap shoot! You can have proven dogs that just won't produce, then again a cold dog has produced some damn hot dogs! I'm sure some of you can recall a cold dog or 2 that wasn't supposed to be woth feeding that has produced some great names.

 

To answer the original question is NO you should not chase a dead dog to the point of excluding all others and never tryin to better what you have. I believe all lines should evolve. Take the Redboy line the 2 most popular crosses with it were Jeep and Jocko they evolved to dogs like Tab and Yellow. But on the other side of the coin there are people who do chase dead dogs with success take pit island kennels not to many can stack Bailey's bingo as tight as them and still have competitive dogs but they manage it so their are no absolutes in life it all depends on what you yourself can do with whatever line you choose to run wether or not you chase a dead dog or add outs to it.

 

LOL thats what makes it fun if there was an exact answer to the question then any body could breed game dogs with success and their wouldnt be a need to compete with them cause all dogs would be equal.

Cold and Cur are different one i dont mind and the other should not be tolerated!!!

Lol, its all fun and games. You do what you can to improve your odds, only question is what is it that you are suppoesed to do when you have the best dogs to the best dogs only to have a dog with no background known hold its own and produce. A dog that is cold for 5 yrs or so and thus considered not worthy of feeding only to be traded off for a few bucks then to end up being a hell of a bulldog. Some dogs just turn on late or after the testing. You'd have to keep every dog for years to know exaclty what they will do.

 

im not saying it isnt possible, but ive never had a dog act cold for 5 years, then fire up....

 

Neither me but, and I was trying to find it but I have a book with some old stories about a dogman trading some food and minimal money for a dog that was deemed no good. This bitch was over 3yrs old. He passed her through his yard and she just didn't want any so he kept her in his house. One day while out feeding his dogs she lit into one and since that day was on fire then turned out to be a good producer as well. I am thumbing through some books now but haven't found it.

I have a bitch (the one in my avatar) that just turned on less than a month ago (she turns 4 in april) some dogs turn on later in life while others never turn on.

 

I wouldnt call her a late starter as the accident you had was the first time she had some teeth in her. I remember her going ass crazy when she was walked a saw another dog its been there.

 

In my opinion? No, he's using the offspring of that dog, the future. Now if he started to inbreed on it just so he can say these dogs are so many times Dibo then yes I consider that chasing dead dogs.

Not really, she has had her ass handed to her several times by Koda in the last 4 months (3x I can think of off the top of my head) and only the last time did she actually give it back to him (very nastily I might add)....I know, I know, people, I try to avoid it but when they live in the house (untill winter breaks) the shit happens from time to time ( I don't crate them they have chain spots in my basement and we alternate every few hours which dog is upstairs), you think they're contained and my girl or myself will open the basement door to do laundry and whichever one is upstairs bolts down the stairs and bam you got an incident. We are just tring to keep the peace untill the snow breaks and Koda can be put on a chain....
Any yes, she has acted right since the day I got her but she has always bowed down to Koda except for this last time which now they have no contact with each other. The basement spots have been separated by fencing so when we do open the door they can't get to each other...Luckily for me it hasn't been a big deal to break them off quickly and only superficial wounds have occured (with the exception of mias torn ear which is hardly noticable anymore that surgical glue is some great shit.......

That dont change the fact that if you have a potent stud dog and breed him to the right bitches youre getting good dogs......regardless if the dog ever was looked at. These men made the decision to breed a dog or two without looking at em because of there intamite knowlidge of the familys thay created and worked with . Their strains never sufferd.

 

you guys are not getting what he was saying. a dog can produce or it cant that does not mean do not check the offspring or even check the parents later. so many of you guys think that oldtimers checked every dog they had. i can guarentee that almost everysuccesfull breeder in these dogs has bred a cur, a cold dog, and an untested dog. did they make a habbit of it no but it was done by carver floyd clemmons colby patrick etc. not all of them were these ruthless cullers that some of yo seem to think. when sppok produced eli she was untested and that was when floyd said that. now say spook late went on to win nand proved game her offspring would remain the same. a lot of old timers only tested there males also
