That's a tough one DP. Never seen either of em go. Buck obviously did more but Bolio could have done a lot more in a different persons hands.

Let us not forget conditioning....goes hand in hand with breeding. Some "ok" dogs have done well in the past in the hands of the right conditioners Pre 1976 of course..

    Idk...

Sometimes inbreeding super tight can "set you up" for the next step.

Look at "Tants Gladys" the bitch is inbred 5x on jocko back to his daughter. I mean HOW much tighter can you go and still hope the things can walk?

But when bred to Tants Bob she produced deadlift n Havana boys Joker. When bred to Yellow she produced GrCh Rodney and powerhouse Sandman.

Sure the Bob breeding is an outcross to redboy, but the Yellow breeding was a loose line breeding IMO. So there's an example of where "looking back" can set you up for your next move forward.

  8. GREAT POST !! & so many are doing it ! idiots not testing & if they did they to stupid to know what to look for & see what they lost, i know for a fact the boyles bloodline can be inbred to hell more than any other bloodline & keep its great traits. when a out-cross is needed i prefer going to a tight RBJ bloodline. look i had a bitch on top & bottom 3 gens bro sister breeding & tight bred beyond that. a true throw back looked just like crazy tippi (rom) & looked totally different from her liter mates. once in a lifetime serial killer a real natural. & just lost her this year. & only bred 2 times & only 4 surviving pups . & i only have 1 female in heat now !

two tigh line bred families from tested stock. which you have personally witnessed are great even when you hit a wall. as they can be bred to make a battle cross. by this time you are probably ready to hand over the mantle to someone younger.lol

well i bred my frozen studs because i know what they produce . it only cost $ 490 the first time to collect and store them. today i store a old male again an it was $ 290 . you might not like to think the old dogs are better . but they were around when the big names were out there. i don't chase dead dogs . i just keep what i know will produce and i breed the females from the line to it . i have 3 lines i like and i know what the dogs did in there pedigree . i'm looking at 5 generation of dogs i know . and i think that helps me more than breeding to somethink i have know idea what they did but through stores . i don't inbreed because my studs are tight enough . you need 2 tight bred lines to get what you really want .

an excellent post...and an excellent topic...here is my take and with $1.50 you could buy a soft drink..(do the math and see the value of my opinion)...i agree that breeding dogs to get a dead dog in there X-amount of times in a six generation will put you on a slippery slope....but if spot (decade old dead dog) threw himself into his sons and daughters and they were then bred to other sons and daughters carrying the same traits your length of successful breeding increases. here are a few examples...i have a dog who is bolio bred on top and redboy/snooty on the bottom...i know both lines very well and have had several out of each lines of this cross...he is carrying all the genes of a bolio dog...just like his dad (straight bolio) and his dad (straight bolio)...in his first breeding to an eli dog i get two females....they both mature and are worth breeding...female #1 is just like her dad...carrying all the bolio genes he does...phenotype/genotype..looks like...acts like...performs like...her ped says she is a 4-way cross of bolio/redboy/snooty/eli...but everything about her is straight bolio....if i breed her back to her father then this is a 'reality inbreeding' (poor choice of words but it is early in the morning)....female #2 is everything her mom was...all eli up and down, inside and out...when bred back to her father this is more like the bolio/eli cross of the original breeding...two different breedings, two completely different females but the exact same set of papers/pedigrees....
i am no breeder...i have never appointed myself as the saver/preserver of a line...when i do breed i breed traits....when i evaluate my dogs i make it a point not to notice their good traits...i try to see the bad...and if the bad is minimal (still worth breeding)...i try to fix that weakness by that weakness being the strength of the stud/bitch....with that said if the same dog pops up a number of times in a pedigree it should be there for a reason....not just to 'tighten for the sake of tightening'...
    interesting post....US1

Well, if the producing dog wasn't tested, then his/her offspring must be tested to prove/sunstantiate the fact that the dog being bred from, is being justified by being worthy to use as stud or brood.

    Yes, more than likely!!!!!!!!

Very true, but they were bred to some of the best around, due to their reputation for what they were able to do and more than likely because they were titled dogs. those who bred to them did so in the hope that they would be able to reproduce the dogs they bred to, or to breed offspring that would be better than Jeep or Honeybunch.
Stud dogs and brood bitches are ultimately justified as worthy breeding stock when their offspring are tested and affirms that.

More true words have not been spoken here. I had a bitch that was as cold as the south pole. When she was 4,5 yrs old I have never seen any better!!! If I culled her I would never have had the son off her that killed her in a yard accident. He broke both her legs like twigs. She was a daughter off Ch Cutlass

This has truelly been a great post and yours here SLIM12, emulates my thinking. An American pigeon racer who died of beestings right here in Africa by the name of Bob Kinney said these words.
"When you have gold coins and silver coins in a jar and you replace a silver coin with a gold coin every time you stick your hand in the jar and draws a silver coin, then your chances of drawing a gold coin from the jar every time you stick your hand in there the next time will be greatly enhanced." To me breeding dogs are the same way, when you breed around the pedigree of a top performer/producer and you are familliar with the traits, you remove the bad traits and breed to those with the good traits, then you greatly enhance your chances of producing the likes more consistenly. BUT here lies the CRUX of the matter, because trairts only become visible when you test to see them.

    Just my opinion.
