    hey..
i think my 4 month old pitbull has problem with his coat.. on his fingers, legs, neck, and head is very rare coat (i'm sorry for my english, i'm using google translate).
he's having problems since he was 8 weeks.
we made a test with wood's lamp (showed nothing), and we took a scraping from his skin and made a microscope test for external parasites (nothing again).
i tried to change his food.. at first he had eukanuba, than we changed to Fitness trainer (Dog Food Reviews - Nova Fitness Trainer Puppy Fish Rice Medium-Maxi - Powered by ReviewPost).
he's alergic to chicken, so he's getting fish and rice. i changed food slowly, it took me about 2 weeks to change completly.
he gets 1 egg on week, once per week i give him raw meat and bone, sometimes he gets raw sardeles, and i'm giving him cottage cheese.
i'm also using fish treats with omega 3 and omega 6.
it never gets better. other littermates has really nice coat. when i get some money i'll buy salmon oil, but can you advise me something else ?
maybe i'm doing something wrong ?

oh, and he doesnt scratch himself at these spots..

when i asked vet, if we could do allergy tests, she said he's too young, and some allergies can go away sooner or later.. its about 200 euros, so if it's not necessary - its hard for me to pay.

put him down and get another dog its probably genetic. hate too be cold just being honest. if you do keep him nueter him. dont ever breed him he could pass that trait on. only breed the strong and hardy.

i aint gonna put him down.. i cant buy pitbull with pedegree here, and i wont pay 2000€ for stafford.
    and i wont breed him.
i'm just looking for advice here how to help my dog, not how to kill it.

Does he lay on concrete? All the areas with thin hair are ones that would touch the ground when he's laying around. Maybe something to do with the ground?

hmm, i dont think so.. because when i got him, he already had thin hair.. now that he's bigger he has thin hair too, but not only on areas where he touch the ground..

Where the dog is loosing hair looks like allergies to me. If you had the vet scrape the skin for manage and it came back negative my guess is this is allergy related. I would put the dog on a grain free dog food. Also Have you made sure to treat the pup for fleas? If you haven't you need to make sure you do that as well if the pup is sensitive to flea bites one bite from a flea can cause a nasty reaction. You can also use benadryl as needed for any itching, licking, or biting some dogs have environmental allergies and will chew their feet and legs excessively this is coming from the histamine reaction the dog is having to the allergen. So during certain times of the year a dog may need to be on benadryl daily to help with allergies. You can also get some nu-stock to help with hair regrowth but honestly it doesn't look too bad but IMO where the dog is loosing hair is consistent with either Demodectic Mange or allergies.

Here is some more info for you to read below: Make sure and read each link

    Demodectic Mange in Dogs

Food Allergies & Food Intolerance in Dogs

    Allergies & Atopy in Dogs

Flea Allergy Dermatitis or Bite Hypersensitivity in Dogs

Always consult your vet if you are uncertain or unsure about adminstiring things yourself at home. Hope this helps.

The uses of benadryl are as follows:
    - Skin irritation and itching.
    - Car sickness and vomiting.
    - Insomnia and anxiety in dogs.
    - Insect/bug/flea bites.
    - Bee/wasp/hornet stings (including inside the mouth).
    - Vaccination reactions (e.g., a Lyme disease shot).
    - Hay fever, coughing/sneezing, and runny/stuffy nose.
    - Asthma and inhalant allergies (e.g., to pollen/dust).
    - Knots/lumps with fluid on the body.
    - Irritation at the tail’s base.
    - Muscle tremors.
    - Ear/eye infections.
    - Bites of some snakes.

Benadryl absorbs into the system fast and often takes a quick effect, sometimes in 30 minutes. However, in some cases, it may take 7-10 days to achieve notable results.

The Safety of Benadryl for Pets

In general, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is extremely safe for dogs, but there are a number of critical precautions:

    - This medication is counter-indicated with some conditions in dogs, including: prostatic disease, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, and cardiovascular disease.
    - It may not be suitable for puppies. If you have a puppy, consult with your vet.
    - For canines, only the pure medication is safe, where the only active ingredient is Diphenhydramine; the Decongestant and Colds/Sinus versions are unacceptable.
    - Liquid Benadryl has high alcohol content, which is unsafe for animals.
    - Children's Benadryl is alcohol/sugar free, but it contains sodium – this is a concern for dogs with some health concerns. - It should not be used together with painkillers and decongestants. It may interact with other medications, and may even be fatal. If your dog or cat is taking anything else – do ask your veterinarian. In general, it is considered safe with heartworm and flea tablets, and steroids.
    - It is very important not to exceed the dosage prescribed.

Some people recommend using a tiny amount of the medication and checking the reaction first.

    Dosage of Benadryl for Pets

There are 2 ways to determine the dose of Benadryl for a pet, and I’ll state both of them below:

    1. Diphenhydramine is administered in the dosage of 1mg per 1 lb of the pet’s weight 3 times a day (every 8 hrs). Example: a 30lb dog is given 30mg of the medication 3 times a day.

    2. Pets are divided into 3 weight categories; the medication is given 3 times a day, every 8 hrs:
    - 30 lbs and smaller pets: 10 mg
    - 30-50 pound dogs: 25 mg
    - 50 lbs and larger dogs: 50 mg

As you see, the dosage depends on the pet’s weight, and the above are general recommendations. To find out how much Benadryl to give to your pet, you need to obtain professional advice from a veterinarian. Too small of a dose may not help, while exceeding the dose can be very dangerous. Also, the vet will help you determine the frequency of administration, such as every 4, 8, or 12 hrs. In addition, they will ask you questions to determine if it’s an allergic reaction or something else. If your financial situation doesn’t allow for a paid visit, you should be able to obtain free help by phone.

Side Effects of Benadryl in Pets

The most common side-effects are: mild disorientation and drowsiness. Others are: dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, problems breathing, agitation, fast heart beat, and urinary retention. Some side-effects can be prevented. For example, to prevent vomiting, give the med with food. To prevent the disturbance of appetite, feed your pet prior to giving the med. In case of side-effects, call a vet.

How to Give Benadryl to Pets

Here are some ideas on how to give this medication to a pet: the pill or capsule placed into chunks of meat; a liquid gel capsule dipped in a tasty treat; anal administration; shots. Most commonly, this medication is given orally, in capsules or tablets. Please contact your vet to find out more on the use of Benadryl for dogs.

if your dog lives indoors , in a central heated house, it may be his body reacting to it's environment (this is most often the problem)

if the dog is not scratching the areas of thin hair, or there is no rash, or flea bites, then it is definitely NOT parasite related
most allergic reactions are accompanied by scratching or a rash or a reddening of the skin

put him on a grain free diet, if that doesn't work research RAW/BARF diets, buy a few books on the subject and consider putting him on a raw food diet

    Hello

go to the VET, ask for Advocate 250 put him that stuff on the neck and in 2 - 4 weeks you will see imediatly how it will be better.. you have to repeat the treatment 3 times.. every 4 for weeks one ampoule on the nec... my advice.. when you start with the treatment mix always some extra water into his food.

it is possible that the dog will loose alot hair when the new hair start to grow...some dogs loose all hair and and form a completely new skin.... but when it happen, its a good sign.

let us know.. i am sure that he will be back to normal in a cople of days.

    good luck..
