From what I've heard it does make a great outcross. Kind of like going back to the roots to freshen things up a bit. Thing is people have taken what they had way back when and made it better. I'd say the Colby line produces game ones just like the rest but I don't think very many of them can compete with the rough mouth dogs of today. I've talked to two people lately who have been using it to some Jeep/Redboy stock. One of them told me the Colby blood brings in the smarts to the already rough hard mouth game dogs. But Colby by itself.........not for me.

mr colby never matched a dog in his life , but tested his dogs as hard as possible. many of the greats say his game test were so rough they were harder than most matches they had witnessed . the question you need to bear in mind is wether colby dogs today are subjected to the same degree of scutiny jp would have insisted in.

about 16 or 17 years ago a friend of mine wanted a bulldog for a pet, I got him a pup off this litter. a few years before that I stopped by Lou's and I was impressed with his dogs at the time.

the above pup grew into a nice dog, he was a beloved pet for over 10 years till he was killed by a car.
my friend wanted another dog so I suggested the colby's.
the first pup he got had a heart problem, any exertion and he just about dies. he got a replacement pup and that one has a horrible underbite so bad he can hardly eat. I've fed many undershot dogs but I've never seen anything like this dog.
also both dogs are terribly human aggressive, not prey-drive aggressive or dog aggressive like a bulldog, they look at people walking by and go nuts like a good bulldog does when it sees another bulldog. I call that dangerous, the dogs need off this planet.
if these dogs are representative of what colby dogs are today then I would say "the line" is well on its way to history if its not already there.

Scratch that and reverse it, It is the amateurs that 9 times out of 10 will tell you that the Colby line is finished.

It is one of those things that most won't ever get the proper Colby dogs to see how great they really are. I have access to a nice batch of Colby dogs and let me tell you they are some of the best in the world. But the man who created these dogs spent his entire life molding and creating his perfect line, And they are 100% Colby.

MR COLBY didnt create a line of game dogs, he maintained one ! with carefully iincluded imports , with hard rolling and culling, a colby bulldog was carefully an graduallly formed. they earned their rep in the fast lane . if the same scrutiny that jp applied is not applied today, then you are maintaining nothing but a name.

Scratch that and reverse it- It's nice you found a nice patch of Colby dogs. You can never say never, about any line- but it's a low percent line. I think people wish they were better than they are -"as a whole". That line "as a whole" hasn't been successful in a very long time. The Colby line, people just love to romanticize.

Don't know if you were talking to me or not but I just wanted to put on the record I am not talking about Mr. Colby. I was talking about a different man.

Again scratch and reverse, Dog for dog there are more good Colby dogs out there than most other lines. But the reason for this being is that the majority of people won't ever lay eyes on them. Totally different than what people have seen and think a Colby dog is, And because of this tight circle around them across the land in the long run they will be way better off.

No romance about it though, The Colby line has great dogs and it is always the rank amateurs that sit back and claim they are garbage.

I have a Carver out cross with Colby , very good looking dog ,good focus, drive and temperament , but he doesn't have much mouth , so they do make great show dogs

  18. that story wasnt from lou colby book it is from his brother joe's book published in 1936. and to wright john p never fought any of his dogs you are mistaken. in joe's book he gives the pit record of some of his fathers dogs

im nobody but i feel like oldtymer... a proper colby would be the best foundation dog for any guy to have esp. someone who's just getting into the game...they've made too many great lines themselves (we all can name a few) i just dont think too many REAL dogman are using them and if i remember correctly alot of those dogs go to pet owners so they cant be called curs or game... unproven i'd take a colby over almost any dog

Another thread with people hating on Colby dogs. It just makes no sense. You are all so ignorant. You expect people to broadcast that their dogs are fastlane ch on a public forum when its completely illegal. Maybe some of you are dumb enough to think the dogs in your yard or your town are the only good ones but guess again...

And Im in mass and I have a pure colby male from jack down in texas. i also have a colby.jeep.redboy female that i wouldnt trade for the world... On any of these threads about Colby dogs you dont hear colby supporters hating on other bloodlines so why would you haters be so closeminded to not return the favor.
