I know a guy that started out as a Colby fanatic.. He purchased and/or was given 7 or 8 pups and yearlings from Lou..
Each and every one of them looked the part.. Well built, excellent structer/comformation, etc..
Made breedings to supposedly "carry on the line", only to find out later that not one of them was worthy of being bred.. Not one.. (Half of them were people aggressive as well)
I have seen a few Colby crosses from the mountains of W.Va that were bonafide bulldogs, but when one breeds for comformation alone (like the majority of those with Colby dogs do), the charecteristics that make a bulldog drift away like the sands of time..

 

And that's the truth. I stand by my statement if one can find it from a maintained strain. The problem I see nowadays is newbies get them a Colby dog and become over night experts and get to breeding, is the line good I suppose some are but the % are no where near what they once were. There will always be a following for the line but people have to honest with themselves about their dogs and that goes for any line.
