It is more of a suffication than drowning because the coon is usually on the face and the dog paniacs instead of fighting back. old man who comes into my work is too old to hunt but not to old to tell me stories about hunting coons.
http://www.coondawgs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=66283 Coon hunting forum I am on. and below a couple of sites that I had saved also

he is a couple of sights I had saved to the favorites. Yes a coon can drown them usually suffication from the coon being on their face and going into water. Coons are truly no joke, they are tough as nails. I had one coon I shot perfect with a .22 mosberg with a scope, I hit the coon in the heart on the first shot (high dollar sierra bullets, not cheap lead .22 bullets) I put five of them in the coon before it would go down, wasn't using dogs. Dogs should be able to handle them but there is still a chance of your dogs getting killed, these coons can be as mean as a badger, especially if you get a big old smart coon, they are big old and fat because they can handle theirselves. With the amount of predators that chases them or pursues them, it will be possible that they have made it pass some pretty rough obstacles in life. Whatever dog you do take it better be a quick mover, because coons move fast as hell when confronted and it is life or death.

To let yourself know and your dog, go to the store or craigslist, buy a trap big enough to get a coon, use a mixture of fruits (fresh works best) and tuna works for me and see if you have enough balls to pick up the trap, when that coon is screaming at you and hissing, not quite the same as the cute little dumpster diver and see how your dog reacts, you will know if they want a piece or not, don't do this to a young pup though, lol, you could fXXk up that pup for life (maybe). This is one of the first steps in training them. Again be a sport and make it fun don't toe to toe these animals just cause you have one trapped or you will be setting yourself up for the same kind of heartache as matching dogs with the animal rights people.

My obession with dogs all started from "Where the Red Fern Grows" by far, best movie and book in the world and definitely a coon hunters top fav. Never cried from a movie except that one when little Ann's lays next to Old Dan's grave, damn that is hard one to take. What is even funnier, I have all daughters we watch that movie all the time and seeing all four of us crying makes the wife laugh her ass off.

I've heard about it and I suppose it could happen but not likely,I have hunted alot and never had it happen, worst case scenario in my coon hunting experience and the thing I always worried about was hollow trees and dozer piles since the odds of getting the coon out in these cases are really slim, wasn't worried about the dog,I just hate to loose the coon.I've also heard the giant catfish stories too.Are you talking about Lake of the Ozarks by any chance?

  9. My Leopard APBT was put in a choke hold one time by a Coon. Craziest thing I have ever seen, one of the first times I let her on a coon she got way too frenzied head butted the tree and the Coon somehow got on her neck grabbed her collar and twisted while clawing and biting. The son of a bitch was choking my dog there wasn't shit that I could do about it the struggle went on for about 8 mins, when my dog got her mouth on the coon it was game over, you could hear the crunches. Coons can be dangerous especially if your dog ain't used to them.

Lol NO coons can't kill your bulldogs, don't listen to that guys bs.
Bulldogs also don't have the nose to trail and tree coon. They wernt bred for nose or treeing ability. But I've used them for barn busting. If they get a coon it's dead. The problem is getting the dog off the coon. Bring a breaking stick.

If a raccoon is trouble for your dog.... That dog isn't worth feeding.

I have a cousin in Michigan who crosses redbones and some bulldogs ,which I hate when gamebred dogs are crossed, but he keeps his dogs locked up tight.but anyway I've ran a few times and they are pretty impressive.I know a guy who does hunt coyote with a bunch of house n one bulldog n she's a beast on a coyote.

  14. My bulldogs are Masters of any small game hunting, because that is what I imprint them on. I posted a video of one of my bulldogs digging a squirrell out of a hole and somebody deleted it. (Apparently nobody was really interested in real time hunting with bulldogs) I have been catching small game with my dogs for the past 20 years. That since I got out of the other part of this game. You don't need a cut collar for a raccoons, unless your dog is a cur and doesn't have any bottom or finish. I all comes down to imprinting them for whatever it is you want them to do. We hunt raccoons, squirrells, armadillos, anything that runs along the ground and is wild, is a target. and occasionally a pigs. PS

Used to take my dog coon hunting after work when I was in OH. Lived next to a creek and bean field. Just walked up the creek. Fortunately, my dog got to liking this event and he would hunt them up. Had one high up in a tree. I went up to cut the bugger down. The dog followed. Once the coon hit the ground, that was that.

He'd go thru brush piles, dig them out of holes, didn't matter. Hardly ever had a scratch. Should have called him, Just One Bite. That was all it took. Quick, clean kill.

A woman at work didn't believe me about Tuff. Told her, I'll bring you a tail tomorrow, which we did. Matched her coon skin coat.

Pitbulls noses aren't too bad. Mine can trail surprisingly well. I have never tried hunting coon but we do a lot of hog hunting our last hunt our group got separated and my catch dog end up lose with a friend. He tracked and catch his own hog, he barked once before he hit it, and the other dogs went running to him. He had a 500 pound hog.

    Folks,
Siccing your dog on another animal is a Felony in most states. It is called animal baiting and is every bit as illegal as dogfighting. Discussions of such matters will be deleted.

Whenever I hear anyone talk about hunting with bulldogs I figure either they don't know anything about hunting or they don't know anything about bulldogs, or both. There is a reason bulldogs are not used for hunting - they are not hunting dogs.
