Do spring poles cause aggression?

Forget a spring pole.....It does no good. A flirt pole with a nice sturdy hide is the better alternative.

The hide "fires" a dog up but does not make him more aggresive. I have been bit a few times when using a flirt pole but it was just excitment.

A "break" command has never nor will never be a command I teach any of my dogs. When the dogs see the break stick come out, they get more aggresive cuz they know its time to let go and they dont wanna. No big deal....just learn to use one properly.

Please forgive me but how did you get bit using a flirt pole? Mine is a 4' piece of pipe with a rope hanging off of it, I am a good bit away from my dog. I'm just asking.

I have taught my girl to let go when told, never used a break stick when playing.

Now how in the hell is that going to happen? All my dogs are on chains BLUE! dont try and school me ! IT is a good way to relive frustration MY dogs are hard drive GAME dogs and like to have a out. I have had chain out toys for my dogs over 20 years and never once have my dogs took off there collar and got in a fight. And by the way SCARES ARE PRETTY!!!!

Because I owned multiple dogs I had to flirt on the chainspot. When the dog woud get broke off the hide, Id have to reset. The pole was about 7-8 ft so id have to hold an excited dog by the collar while i choked down on the pole. Sometimes the movement of the hide in the air would make em wanna crawl up me just to get to the hide. I got nipped on the butt and sides a few times.

Ive recently found out i cant spring pole both my male and female at the same time it gets them too hot. I gotta be careful during the tug a war games also sometimes cant do it too long and i always have to have 2 ropes. You gotta know when to shut it down always watch their eyes and body language. No more spring pole together for my dogs and i always put away the tug a war rope away when i leave the yard. Those games should be done 1 at a time, my dogs been good with each other for almost 1 year so i want to keep it that way. Although im sure if they did squabble they would love each other again few minutes later i dont want to see that happen.

  9. The springpole can be a useful conditioning tool when used correctly (hind legs ON the ground. Flirtpole is way better, IMO. It really stimulates the prey drive. They get that look in their eyes when they see me going for that pole. I love it! It gives a better overall workout. Neither the springpole nor the flirt pole cause aggression..only genetics and/or influence does that.

As far as teaching a release command...not me. Why teach a bulldog to refrain from using his/her talent? Hell, I encourage it. A tired dog lets me sleep peacefully at night. Sounds like too many folks want to humanize these dogs. If I want my dogs to release something, I just walk away. As long as I don't show interest, neither do they. They only want to please me. Now if a situation breaks out with one or more of my dogs, I got the 'ol faithful parting stick and leads in pocket. ;)

How does a release command equate to the humanization of an animal? If anything, it's reinforcing the dog's place in life, which is that it's owner speaks and it listens, not the other way around. Some dogs are just so happy on that pole that they won't get off, even after they're tired and while I respect your opinion, I find that to be particularly unfair since not all dogs will just walk away from the pole just because you did. And it's not teaching a bulldog to refrain from it's talent because whether or not you teach it to out on command doesn't mean it's going to have less of a grip, it just means to let go of what's currently in your mouth, which really doesn't apply to anything living

So you're saying, if you teach your dog and 'out' or 'release' command, that you're humanizing them? Please elaborate.

If you were attempting to teach a dog to never use their talent or trying to ignore it, that's one thing but I'm failing to see how teaching a dog a bit of self control and obedience is humanizing?

  12. That's fine and dandy if you want to focus on obedience with your dog. I just prefer to let a bulldog be a bulldog and never break a hold without me twisting that stick. Though teaching a few manners is never a bad thing if you are in a public enviroment. My dogs don't interact too well with others (dogs that is) but I wouldn't want them any other way plus I don't do public places with my dogs either. I am responsible enough to keep my bulldogs away from those situations. I simply choose preservation over evolution, that's all. But hey, that's why some went a different path than others, hence the AST.

Sorry if I offended anyone with the humanizing comment. Mine don't hear shit when they have a hold on something. If you can get yours to, that's wonderful. Cesar Milan himself couldn't talk my dogs out of a hold.

No hard feelings, I just don't like it when people stick me up there with animal rightsy types. My favorite kind of dog is one that knows it's a dog. If more people treated thier dogs as such, I doubt so many people would have problems with thiers. But that doesn't mean it gets to act the ass should we have to be in a public situation (walks, the vet, company over ect...)
And while he may break a hold on his toy because I've asked him to, I'm not so naive to expect it to work on anything else or for this command to work with every single dog because of what the dog is, which is why the breakstick would stay nearby regardless. The sooner people realize how important of a safety measure that thing is, the better

  14. I didn't mean to lump anyone up in that category nor push my methods on anyone, once again, I apologize if it came off that way. As far as public enviroments like the vet and around company, I don't bring my flirtpole with me...lol. Now playing fetch with my dogs, I can get them to release the ball, wubba, etc, by saying "drop it" but the flirtpole is a different story around here. I actually use a steel pole and I simulate springpole action with it while encouraging them to not lose grip. I even use those stuffing-less animal toys on the end. My dogs don't lack control by any means but the break command is just something I don't do but I don't expect everyone to agree with this, as we all have our own goals.

I personally have my dogs trained to let off on my command. However, on the other side of the coin... i have witnessed individuals who have no clue , let there dogs get out of control during these exercises.[/quote]

You said dogs, which is plural, which means more than one dog!! Make up your mind please. Dont give advice if you gonna tell stories.

I think springpoles are a great way for your pitbull to exercise and get his aggression out but I wouldn't be running my springpole if other dogs are around. I cant speak for everyones dog but for mine he gets into a roudy competitive state where he will start to look for fights, so no springpole or any other toy around for that matter. IMO springpole is the best neck and jaw exercise there is, there is just the right and wrong place to do it.

My previous dogs would get into fights if both were playing on rope at same time. Learned that its a game for 1 at a time. I just got a new pup and plan on exercising her on the rope.

SPRING POLLs are a good release of energy or aggression. If some dogs never shook anything and you turn it onto
a SPRINGPOLL and they like it ,SURE they might show more agression on other toys or stuff they get thier mouth on.
An OL'TYMER taught me IF THE DOGS GOING TO EVER BE IN CONTACT WITH KIDS to never use a rope for a SPRING POLE,FLIRTPOLL or TUG A WAR as kids like to jump roap etc..TUG A WAR is okay with some dogs but a better practice is putting something inbetween the human and dog.Such as a SPRINGPOLLs or FLIRTPOLLs with a piece of nylon holding a hide to bite.
Teaching dogs commands or "humanizing them" can only be bad if your ignorant and lack leadership skills.
Evan the HARDCORE BULLDOGGERS can benifit from a simple release command .Anymore sportmanship is lacked
and the good ol pick up is getting rare."RELEASE"handle and scratch benifits your dog and might prevent them from stopping on top if they lack finish and lose interest as history prevails.
