Just like most greats of their time, he was ahead of his time. I think a lot of his forward thinking is lost as the science of nutrition and supplementation is light years ahead of where it was in his day. VO2 MAX and Glycogen depletion and glycemic index and red blood cell count are common terms in today's game but he was doing and using those things back then they just did not have names nor were they well known.

    Two stories on Mayfield.

In the late 70's the man that turned me onto the dogs as a kid went out west for a visit with Mr. Mayfield. After his visit he came back and we used the treadmills differently. I don't remember if the feed changed I just remember the time on the mills got shorter but more intense. The best part of the story is that Howard could shoot a curve with the best of them. He assured us he went out west and taught that sonofabitch a thing or two about a bulldog.

Second was from JY who partnered with VJ for a lot of years and when VJ was in Texas had dogs from Mayfield. I asked JY once about the 8 hour runs on the jenny and he assured me it was true the dog was on the jenny for 6-8 hours, sometimes more. He says the story that is not told is that Mr. Mayfield would be feeling it from the night before and was a believer in the 'hair of the dog hangover remedy' and would put the dog on the jenny. He would then pass out and wake up some hours later. Some of the dogs damn near killed themselves unattended and others just stopped and napped with him.

VJ sent a Mayfield dog back to South Carolina and she did really well, winning twice in short order. He asked for her back to breed to the 'family' and do some pup deals later. When they declined his offer, then she was not bred the way she was sold, and she was a cur and would not be recognized as one of the 'old family' dogs.

After that JY never really cared for Mr. Mayfield. He gave him the utmost of respect with working dogs, and doing dogs and being one of the all-time greats but one sour deal can put a bad spin on most anything in the dogs.

I watched a series of videos and he never seems to get to the subject, which is a great part of conversation.

Don claimed many a dog as from his bloodlines who were otherwise registrated by the people who kept them. Coy's Gr Ch Banjo as one of them. Whatever the truth is I didn't care much as I didn't feed or bred those mentioned dogs and couldn't change a bit of it. To me the best truth is by seeing it with your own eyes. The man was a walking encyclopaedia and as everyone know was full of stories about dogs and the folks with and around them. I was glad to pick his brains way back while visiting him in his Trophy room.

    No doubts.

I would have enjoyed that tremendously.

    The conversations are the best.

I still love listening to the recording of he and Maurice, discussing shit eaters, and talking about Indian Sonny. Just casual conversations between two absolute legends.

When sonny was gonna get tied to a "tree and banged by a black dude with a foot long dick" over a dog coming up missing or a different recording? Lol

We talked till late at night, the way Maurice died, the way they both and others were operating their dogs business in their heyday. At a moment in the middle of a conversation I had to take a piss, outside in the dark and was so strong out by the best of the crop taking a leak So long that Mayfield came out shouting if I was still alive LOL

I was talking with a friend last night about the passing of the War Eagle and the conversation turned to the stupid shit people say in these dogs.

Howard bought a male from Don way back when and Don told him the puppy was happy and healthy, happier than a 'queer with a bag full of dicks'.

That phrase was a fad around here for several months and any mention of 'happy' that sentence just jumped right out.

I am sure the majority of those conversations were not exactly 'politically correct'.

"Once upon a many years ago" I could tell you every detail of every dog that ever around here. Over time a lot of those dogs escape me but the people and the conversations stick. Maybe not so much word for word, but the jist of the conversations and the times spent 'shooting the shit in and around the dogs'.

Those greats like Mr. Mayfield, Mr. Mims, Mr. Hargrove and so on and so on impacted the game in a lot of ways but the fact people will always talk about them may be the biggest impact of all.

The man who bred Don's bloodline here visited him and was denied entry. There he was with two of his friends in the great Texas. They called me in panic for help. After I spoke to Bobby Hall, they were allowed to come over and stay there. There too they experienced an adventure that I will save for another time. Another friend who visited Don said that when he shook his hand, he was overcome with fear of the man. Had to laugh out loud because Don was an impressive presence but terrifying!? Don was a little different than usual, but above all a pleasant man full of exciting and interesting stories.

One thing about Don, his texas drawl was syrupy sweet. My family all comes from west Tennessee, so a southern accent was standard issue around my folks. Some may sound ignorant, some may be so thick you can hardly understand it. And then some just sound entrancing. Don's was this was. His voice reminded me of Levon Helm's, one of those voices I could listen to narrating stories for hours on end.

One of my favorite things about the old timers is that in the eyes of some they couldn't do any wrong. In the eyes of those that know mostly all they did was wrong lol.

All you have to do is to give respect to oldtimers who're for real. But watch out that they don't pull your leg.LOL. A dogman who's nice and honest to me is maybe the other way around with other folks. I know a "dogman"who is put on a pedestal by his cronies but my personal experience with him is that he's a 1st class asshole and nobody can convince me different. Some oldtimers are not that honest but knows a lot anyway about all the good and bad tricks used LOL and some are just plain honest stand-up guys and a wealth of knowledge.

Hell, I find that most people, in general, aren't honest, lol. I don't even hold that against anyone. I look at everyone with skepticism, and use my own intelligence and research to determine what was real and what was b.s. I believe you can learn from everybody. It may not be the knowledge that you were initially seeking, but your interaction is going to reveal SOMETHING, even if it was just the fact that the person is completely full of crap.
