do you guys have any tips on making them drop the toy like a tug or a rope or a ball? i have a 100% frisco/chinaman (dynomite great grandson) and he's 4 now. i've always had a problem with him and fetching a ball or playing tug. his prey drive is so high, all he wanted to do when he gets to the ball or toy when i throw it is kill it, he doesn't not care about bringing it back, and he does everything he can to not let me near it. even with a flirt pole, when he gets it, its very hard for me to get him to drop it, even with the trade technique or anything. any help please? i'd love to add fetching the ball to my conditioning work. thanks!!!!

2. You best option is a break stick. They aren't really programmed to let go. Kinda goes against their nature.

no i know that. haha im just seeing if anyone had any success play fetch with a really hard bite dog. i can eventually get hi to drop it, its just really hard. i'm just really jealous of the amstaff owners who can have a fun time playing fetch. anyone?

i have two males that i need my stick when its time to stop playing and i have two bitches that will drop it on command the only thing I did different was I had my bitches living indoors as pups so they got taught to drop it my males where never house dogs other then that the dogs come from the same family so I guess its just what you teach them as youngsters

I'd try to put a treat in his face and say good boy, that may help, but it also may not. That is how I'd go about teaching one to fetch. Eventually he may decide that the treat is better than to hold on to the toy. Depends on the dog.
Its easier to teach these things at a young age. You can teach an old dog new tricks, just study dynamics and some help from more seasoned owners never hurts either. There are some awesome magazines that are good reads when it comes to things like this.

Best o luck !

I mean I'm sure the dog is capable of learning the drop it command if that's something you want to teach your dog. Otherwhise get a break stick. I'm just shocked you have a 4 year old great grandson of dynomite. He has direct sons younger than that.

^^^ lol.... but back to the topic, get a retriever if that's what your looking to do! 4yrs and you haven't figured out that he's not a good fetch dog! And as far as those treats I wouldn't suggest that because all he's going to be worried about is treats and might take his eyes off the prize! ex,(He'll run to fetch but will leave whatever you threw to come back to you and get a treat)

well i understand he isn't a good fetch dog, he's a tom garner dog, his prey drive is through the roof, so when he gets to it, he tries to kill it no matter what it is. he loves flirt pole and the spring pole, but its just letting go when i say it. he'll drop it when we do TUG workouts, but if its something he chases down and grabs, its hard to get him to let it go, haha i always joke around and say when these dogs get that look in their eyes its almost like a great white when their eyes go black

yes its possible.. be more stubborn than the dog.. us the word AT loudly as if your saying NO.. .. follow up DROP IT.. but when the dog fetches and is at your feet trying to kill the rope, stick, ball.. simpley say DROP it and be consistant you can train this as easily as you can train your dog to stack out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqAmq--3rqw&feature=plcp"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqAmq--3rqw&feature=plcp

follow that and you can see my lil bulldog turk dispatch a 37lbs coon .. I had to pull him in to say the sweet words in his ear.. "break it" and then when broken .. "drop it" .. The coon done tried to get me and I used him to teach Laika how to take the kill bite and not torment it to death. I didn't know if I could post the clip here to show you.. practice putting the dog in the red zone and pulling them out from less than a year and that makes them great assets hunting and on the ranch. ... you promote the dog for doing good and as you pull the item from the dogs mouth you just keep repeating drop it when they do.. PRAISE THEM EXCLAMATIVELY and let them know they done REAL good for dropping on command. You see you just are building a dog on command by doing so. It worked for me with a JRB dog or two, a Halls dog, a Hammonds dog or two, and all the others in between..

Bloodline (pedigree) has nothing to do with anything hence the closed thread lol, but at the same time like he said 4yrs that's the way his dog likes to play which is the way he should play, but @ the same time( if your persistent @ anything you can achieve results), but @ the same time let the dog be what he is were talking about him playing with toys are equipment that's supposed to be handled that way. Like I said earlier this ain't retriever's! There supposed to play like that!

Thread looks open to me, so I'm going to try to post. I did not say to give the dog a treat every time he retrieves. Just may help to get mind programmed. My dogs all like praise better than a treat any day. I was simply saying that it may help him make the connection that you want him to drop the item.

I remember the first time I saw Hoagie's vedio and how he stacked out on command. That dog has mind for sure! I was astounded. I wish I had more free time right now to be working on these type of things I have some super smart dogs that have wonderful vocabulary and I really need to work more.. Yes pedigree does matter. Talk to any breeder and ask them what happens when a dog is too tightly bread. They will tell you that they lose mind and gain crazy. Any I talk to say that anyway. Depends what type of dog you want or like.

Nobody has posted anything that WILL NOT help you.
You have to try different things and see what works for YOU and YOUR DOG. Prices and participation may vary. LOL

Closed thread was a joke, I'm not bashing you on treats I'm just saying I don't suggest treats! Every has there opinions. Like I said McCoy the bloodline of the dog does not matter I don't care what someone has told you on that one! Dogs breed to tight to where there retarded would only be done by someone who doesn't know what they are doing! In this thread the blood of the dog does not matter! Teaching a dog to stack are whatever you people that go to shows do has nothing to do with prey drive, are the will to keep going on when tugging a rope are chasing down a ball and trying to eat it. stay on topic!

I tried to edit but it bs'ed me, smarts has nothing to do with the dog being a determined dog at what he's doing, I wouldn't take that away from him!

16. try a second ball, if he drops the first ball to go after it use whatever command you want, after a while he will know to leave /drop it

I am working on this with a couple of pups right now, and tried just about all that has been suggested in this thread. Every dog is different in how fast they will learn what you are trying to teach them, patience and persistence will work to your advantage in the long run. Good luck with him :)
