I have been feeding my girl innova since she was a puppy starting off with the large breed puppy formula and then I swtiched over to the innova red meat formula around 10 months and just last week or so I began the EVO brand, she is a year and 5 months old. She has been delighted with this brand eating with much more enthusiasm at meal times and the first couple of days her feces were solid since I did do a good amount of research regarding this brand since I would love to feed raw but I cannot at the time, so this has been rated a 6 star dog kibble. I did ran into a few owner reviews saying their dogs would have diarrhea because of the high protein which is about 42% crude protein. Well sure enough she is having diarrhea these past couple of days maybe I made the mistake of switching to suddenly? or should I just rule it out or give it time to see if she can handle it? she is not giving any other indication of health problems at all in fact she has more energy! but yet the diarrhea is a concern to me I am not sure if I should give it time or if I should mix innova in with the evo? I feed her two cups daily and from the current evo that she is consuming I give one cup of the red meat and one cup from the original. I will highly appreciate your inputs thank you! p.s. we are in the first week of a keep.

  2. stick with it for a lil while, diarrhea is pretty common when switching foods. she should get used to it in a couple days to a week. just make sure she gets plenty of water until the diarrhea stops

I used to feed Evo, but I found some general literature that pointed to the excessive protein levels of many "grain-free" dry feeds. Most of them (Evo included) attempt to replicate the benefits of feeding a raw diet, by removing many of the common unhealthy fillers, while they pack +40% of protein in dry-food form.

I believe (I could be wrong about this) moist natural meats tend to consist of 26-28% proteins and 16-18% fats... and the meat is naturally "moist". Feeding all of that excessive dry protein on a regular basis might take its toll on a dog's kidneys, since its not biologically designed to handle all of that.. ... the dog would probably need to drink a ton of water just to process that stuff.

I have no idea if any of that would be related to your dog having the runs, but I thought it might be a useful tidbit since you mentioned you just started feeding Evo. Good luck

my opinion is that amount of protein is for keep feed only, not daily maintenance, dogs dont need that much protein for daily feed and could slowly wreck their kidneys over the years

that would be my suggestion i feed Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete and raw in keeps and it works well

The amount you spend on Evo per month for 1 dog.....you could be feeding a very nice and simple raw diet also.

  8. From memory most RAW meats contain closer to 18-22% protein, when you feed a concentrated/dehydrated food like EVO you will probably feed roughly half as much (or less) compared to a raw diet.
So 200g of EVO @ 42%protein or 400-450g of raw @ 20% protein.Works out being in the same ball park. That's how I look at it anyway.

Jack ate EVO during the show season. He looked great, but the food is too expensive to feed year round. A 30 pound bag did last a while, though.

Yea ours were on it for a while and did great, but i quit feeding it to them as a regular daily food because of the danger to the kidney's and the insane $$$

If the food is cut with water, would that balance out the high level of protein?

Most of the time Jack was on it, he was eating canned EVO and an EVO "soup" because he had a tooth extracted and couldn't eat dry kibble.

Never feed 100% evo It is hard on kidneys like other people mention it, mix it up with some other brand 50/50, 75/25 for shows. Nutra Nugget for example is probably the most affordable and just as good as any other premium brands like Nutro, Canidae, and others. If you are concerned with water intake, I would suggest adding water to kibble before you feed it, let it sit for 15/20 minutes I find it that this helps with diahrrea, and just easier for dogs to consume and digest it.:D:D

    My .02!

    Good luck

As i read on it seems like people dont feed evo on a daily base. So is diamond the same? Not to thread jack but whats a good high protein kibble than is not hard on the kidneys.

Diamond naturals is a decent daily feed but not nearly on level with Innova, regular adult Innova has optimal daily protein/fat percentage with excellent ingredients

we'll see in a few more years the negative effects on these dogs fed these high protein diets year around, they havent been around long enough to see the effects. They could be slowly killing your dogs, time will tell

Evo's amount of protein isnt neccessary anyway for daily feed

I totally agree with you, not unless you are training for a weightpull, and working out daily and hard, to feed a dog EVO on a daily basis is pointless, the body only uses the protein it needs it, the rest is processed converted and stored as fat reserve. Once it is converted into fat the process cannot be reversed.

I believe I am going to just mix half and half of the regular innova red meat and evo red meat by tomorrow since I am highly convinced that this diarrhea she is having is from evo let alone. Since this diarrhea has been for about a week now should I aid her with any specific medications such as pepto? or try the white rice? I was also searching through the threads with similar diarrhea subjects and some were stating that the dog shouldn't eat at all for 24 hours in order for recovery to take place? thanks for all your inputs so far but I am still unease with her diarrhea I have been making sure she is hydrating enough which she has/is but yeah should I try giving her something to relieve all this madness?

  18. EVO is a very calorically dense food,so you feed much less of it.

    EVO:Protein: 42% Fat:22%
    Calories:4,243 kcal/kg (537 kcal/cup)

    Diamond Naturals:Protein: 26% Fat: 16%
    Calories: 3,708 kcal/kg (368 kcal/cup)

Protein wise,is feeding 200g of EVO @ 42% protein that different than 300g of Diamond Naturals @ 26% protein??What's the protein difference between them, like 5g or so??

25% boiled chicken, and 75% white rice will help ease the diahrrea
