I was just wondering what types of food people fed their dogs during a keep. I have heard of egg noodles, spinach, salmon along with vitamans and other supplements. What other meals are being used.

depends on which dog,.. I have one here who I will be using egg noodles on next keep.
I have been giving him some for winter and wow. nice result.

but BARF diet is a good one.

also heard about mashing a banana with a tsp. of honey for breakfast.

we like taste of the wild dog food.

I'm surprised this topic hasn't picked up much. Nobody wants to share their feed tips, lol. Anyone can work a dog. It's the feed that makes the difference.

i have to disagree with u on that. i think what u ment was that anyone can make a dog look good but 99% of people cant condition a dog to perform. Pro PLan high performance and rf1 is all u need! i dont give a shit what any one says. I also add a few extras:) like red cell

There's only so many ways to work them but there's even more ways to feed them. The feed is the secret.

Think about it. What is there to do? Walk them, run em on the mill, bike, ect, spring pole, weighted vests and pulling shit? oh and swim em' too? The feed is the most difficult thing to do. What do you feed? How much do you feed? Do you add this? Do you add that? Raw? some raw and some kibble? Supplements? Steroids? the list of shit you can add to their food is endless. What is the winning reciepe? I was actually hoping one of these retired ond timers on here would give their input on this subject but they have stayed away.

Anyone thats knows me knows im one of the best ever when it comes to that.(dont believe me ask some OT) People make it more difficult than it needs to be with the food. One thing about the feed it should stay consistant threw the whole keep. When it comes to working a dog thats when it becomes tricky. Im not going to get into a whole lot because i cant stand typing. I will say this u cant ruin a dog from feeding as long as ur not feeding garbage but u will ruin a dog from over working him. U can totaly get out classed from not having enough work or being to week or loosing all the mouth from over working. You can have a dog to lean , you can have a dog to bulked up and he fatigue due to the body not being able to deliver enough oxygen to the muscles. Think about what ur saying, food is the easiest part of the keep. kEEP IT SIMPLE!

I agree on the over conditioning thing, I learned that the hard way. You don't think you can do the same thing by feeding them? Some things you add to the food can make them run hot. You can also hurt them by adding things like creatine to the food. Remember you are what you eat. So you can easily hurt them by the food you give them.

  15. I learned all I know about diet from Don Mayfield. What he taught me was to feed a dog like if he was in the "wild of nature" hunting for his own food. All our diets consist of natural meats (cow, chicken, fish...etc.) with some veggies and supplements. We use very little grains and they are only there as fillers. The supplements we use are geared mainly toward building up a high red cell count naturally, plus vitamins, branched aminos and proteins for the rest of the body.
Using this type of diet and matching it up with a good program for working a dog you can achieve naturally around 95-97% of all the benefits you can get from anabolics without the risk of screwing it up so bad because when you miss with the juice your dog turns out like crap but if you miss with the natural diet your dog may not be in the best shape or peak condition but it won't be so bad.
It takes more time and work but it all comes down to how dedicated you are to the mutts.

I agree with what you say about anabolics. mess that up a little bit and it can mean doom for your dog. Do you mix the the raw with a good kibble?

I agree that what you feed is very important but the conditioning is much more important. You can have great conditioning coupled with superior genetics and only an Ok diet and the dog will still excel but a good diet on a shit dog with poor training will get you nowhere. As far as the conditioning goes there are many more variables than mentioned, such as intensity level, volume, time under tension, rest period, frequency, etc etc.

yOU JUST VALIDATED MY POINT KEEP IT SIMPLE. You prove me write every time, the saying goes(u r ur worst enemy)! everyone make things so complicated and thats when you run into all the problems you stated. So what ur saying is just do evrything under the sun as far as exercise, any which way and as long as u have the "secret" recipe in feed your dog will perform like a superstar. I dont think so! Scientificaly it doesnt make sense. i would think you as an athlete would know better.

I must be an idiot! lol i must have had a horse shoe up my ass all these years. rf1 has every essential nutrient a dog could possibly need, anything else the body discards.

I guess your right, man. I never looked at it like that. When i first started I swear I made every mistake working a dog possible. If you could mess it up, I did it. Mostly if was because I was mr athlete and I thought how can anyone tell me how to work out. That is what I do for a living. Boy, I should of shut up and listened. i made everything way more complicated then it needed to be. I finally found out how simple conditioning is. I still thought feeding was complicated. Because my mentor adds this and adds that. seems complicated to me. I guess until you know for sure what do add, keep it simple, just like conditioning. Just seems everyone doesnt mind talking about how to work them but when you get to talking about feeding them, no one wants to say anything. Thanks for the advice chdynomite:)
