Who feeds fish and what kind?I got some mackeral(sp) for my dogs and they tore it up,but I really dont know how often I can give it due to the mercury thing.I've also heard people say they feed salmon ,but I live in KS,so fish can get kind of exspensive. Is one kind better for them or does it matter?

Just a heads up on the Salmon, raw in particular: (PLEASE do NOT feed it to your dog)

Salmon (Raw)Commonly called "Salmon Poisoning Disease" (or SPD), this can be a problem for anyone who feeds their dog a raw meat diet that includes raw salmon, but it is mostly seen in the Pacific Northwest and California. The cause is infection by a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. The rickettsial organism does not directly infect the dog but is carried instead by a parasite (a flatworm or fluke) called Nanophyteus salmincola through two intermediate hosts - freshwater snails and salmonid fish.

eewww, thanks.I have never heard of that .But,as I said I'm in KS and most people here wont even touch fish. When I was young we always had fish(lived on an island)but never really ate salmon.I wasnt really too keen on the idea of salmon anyway,as it's rathar exspensive here. Thanks for the info,I'm going to sak the docs at work if they've ever seen or heard of it.

n/p, it was one of those things that stuck in my head, in regards to fish and canines

is the only type of fish that i know of/can recall that's not recommended for dogs.

I feed salt-free sardines as an add-in for my dog's kibble. Occasionally, I'll poach some whiting or polluck for him. All three have relatively low levels of mercury. I would feed canned salmon occasionally but Stockey can't have a lot of salt.

Here's the FDA's list of fishes with higher and lower levels of mercury:

Were you planning to feed fish raw or cooked? As Suki said, there is a risk with feeding raw salmon from the NW. There's also a risk of tapeworm and marine roundworm in some fish if they aren't cooked completely.

Is canned salmon safe? I feed my dogs canned salmon about once every other week. They really like it.

Thanks for the list.I never even thought of sardines. The fish is in a can,I guess It's cooked ,I dont really know. The only fish in a can I eat is tuna,so i've never really noticed, allthough I would assume it probably is cooked.

Loki enjoyed the spoonbill that my husband snagged. We don't generally have fish here, so I can't comment on anything else.
