Get your dog to swim?

My dogs will go into the river only to about as deep as their chests. They've both fallen in at times and my younger dog actually jumped in after a tennis ball but when she was getting out my older dog was blocking her exit. Which I think scared her from ever wanting to get back in again. Any tips on how to get them to jump in? Also is it bad to throw them in?

  2. Dont throw them in, let them watch another dog swimming. Here's my newest pup learning to swim.

PUT a nylon harness on your dog and get in the water with him. Walk him deeper until he has to swim,at that point take hold of the top of the harness to help support your dog to help keep him from struggling to swim. Do this several times on different days steadily increasing the time your dog swims. A pleasant experience will encourage your dog to want to swim on his own.

Step1: grasp firm grip around neck
Step2: do a couple circle spins
    Step3: release
Now dog should be in flying towards middle of river and will shortly be swimming back with no problems. Lol

YOU DONT HAVE TO GET WET TO TEACH A DOG TO GET IN WATER. TOYS ETC... ALL ELSE FAILS - use the 3step plan above.

on children make sure step1: grasp firm around (wrist or ankles ) dont want people saying you were choking your kid before you threw them in the water! lol
