what he might mean is that he wants to knock the opponent down with the first round and then level him/her later but more importantly knock them down so that they cannot return fire as would be the case of using a 9mm where the opponent gets hit but doesn't go down and is still able to return fire. i'd rather knock down and finish than exchange fire and get hit bc i couldn't render my opponent ineffective.

if you think a 9mm doesnt hit:rolleyes:, i'll show you what i had last night for supper....tell that big doe i smacked this winter with a 147gr GoldDot that she shouldnt drop cuz i only hit her with a 9mm. from the cutting board, to the marinade, and later on the grill. and yes, that Becker Combat Bowie is my go to kitchen knife

c'mon, of course its gonna kill em. But it doesnt have the same stopping power.

there isnt a handgun out there that has enough "stopping power" when it comes to two legged varmints. i'll always take a long gun if i had to make the decision, but my CCW doesnt allow for a 12 gauge or a 223 inside my jacket. when it comes to handguns, folks spend too much time focusing on knockdown and not enough time on making hits count. thats what will win a gunfight.

next time you go to your local range, watch others shoot. ive been laughed at by guys with everything from .45s to the big .500 magnum because i choose to carry a 9mm. meanwhile those dumbasses cant even stay on target and im tearing one ragged hole at 7 yards all day long. i shoot all my handguns reasonably well, including the big bores, but there is no sense in thinking a well placed shot with a .38 or a 9 wont do the trick. if it has to be a handgun, you all can pack all that "knockdown power", i'll take 15+1 and faster recovery time between well placed shots.

I personally love my XD in .45 acp. when its fully loaded it is balanced really well. Shoots straight as long as I do my part. Far as small bores go i havn't met anyone who volunteered to be shot with a .22. the best gun is the one you have the moment you need it imo.

thats right, in a bind the mousegun in your pocket is worth alot more than the .45 at home sitting on the dresser.

well i dont think anyone would say HEY IM GONNA GONNA SHOOT THIS GUY UNLESS ITS A 40 AND UP lol

its just good debate talk, i wouldnt turn any gun down though lol they are golden, the value never goes down.

Those XD Mfactors are packin even more than that in a clip now (18 or 19) +1. I'll be the first to admit the .45 is nothing more than a mental booster cause it's so BIG!! I've carried a .22 and heard for a hitman it's the most carried round. Most accurate I believe. .45 def is not the most accurate and that's important at 25 yards but most encounters are very close. I think I also heard that at a certain distance the guy with the knife is going to get a clean stab faster than the guy reaching for his gun. But he's still gonna get shot =]. I've packed a .22. I'd do it again too. But I do love that .45.

    woody has it right.

first you need practice (and big bore pistols are an expensive habit), second you need to be a good shot, and third you need to be able to stay in the fight.

we could go off on a shotgun tangent and take this thread another 5 pages, but that's for another day. i won't start on why i feel the mossberg has a factory setup that is far superior to any other home defense gun on the market (barring a leo-issued benelli m4, but i still feel a fault is how you load the shells......those slap-down covers will pinch your finger like a motherfucker if you are loading from a ready-fire position).

Im not really planning on being in bear country so .45 .44 .357 is about as big as i need. Im sure them hand cannons are fun to shoot though.

I showed the S&W 500 because I like how LeeD said two-legged varmit and I thought it was appropriate.

    you can keep your AA-12.

i plan on shooting my target with my 590, not replacing all the drywall in my house if there's a reason to shoot.

i've shot the same ak-47 saiga serveral times. fun? YES. effective/efficient/trainable for home defense? NO.

sure my 590 a1 hd is a little hefty, but my wife can slam slug after slug in the same spot at 35 yds all day with the cst sling i have. she can maneuver through halls, switching stance and positions, shoulder to shoulder almost smoother than me. call me crazy, but we shoot out and in an empty farm house on my sister's land. there's no sense in shooting a single target or wailing on clay pigeons (although a cheap hobby with a shotgun) all day. you need to practice for what you'd use it for in real life. same goes for pistols.

all you cats singing the praises of a big bore pistol, go out with several mags to an open field. set up points to sprint between with targets at varying distances. and one extended run of 50+ yards with that target being CLOSEST. run your trials, shooting from a standing and one-knee position and see how accurate your .45+ pistols are. and don't forget to time yourself. someone effective with a 9mm is WAY more deadly.

ya'll probably close one eye to aim with those hand cannons.

^----this is not directed at ANYONE in this thread, just some shit i like to give to some guys i've seen out at the fish and game who are high and mighty on their "shooting skills;" no one ever taught them to acquire their target properly though, and i'd like to see them get on sight with one eye closed when their adrenaline is pumping, since your body won't let you close one eye at a time in that state.

CK, it seems you and i think alike in alotta ways, but i will admit, i dont have a women who is capable of throwing deer slugs downrange with that ability. that would be nice to have a second person capable of that in the house. i did alotta research awhile back looking to get an AK and wasnt impressed with the Saigas that i got to shoot, so i managed to pick up a Norince real cheap. it is only a plinker, and not the first carbine im gonna grab outta the safe if one is needed. thats what my ARs are for.

as for the shotguns, im an 870 guy, but one thing i do think the Mossbergs have on the Remingtons is the tang mounted safety. good design that works better for a lefty. i only wish i had access to a "shoot house" like you do, all i can do is clear my own place with an unloaded weapon. its practice, but id love to do it with live ammo.:D

another point you made is the "one eye closed" shooters. ive tried to show others the benefit of keeping both open and train yourself to focus on the sights with the dominant eye, and yes, it is something that takes practice, but thats how i shoot. periferal(sp) vision is a good thing. thats why i bought a Savage Scout in Feb. with a 1.5X scope forward mounted i can effectively shoot out alot farther than you would think with both eyes open. it is my first "scout type" setup, and it really is something i liked right away. the 150 gr .308s were overkill on the coyotes, but it was a very handy little gun that seen alotta use as soon as it was sighted in. its gonna make a great deer rifle. ok, enough of the rant, but afterall, i am a gun nut

that's what sold me on the mossberg.....you can operate the safety, trigger, and slide release without ever moving your hand from a fire-ready position.

you need to get a cst sling for your 870, best thing i've ever bought for a weapon. i have a 6 shot side saddle and the buttstock 6 shot shell holder from specter gear also......you can keep your weapon ON SIGHT and FIRE with one hand and have the ability to reload your weapon without ever moving away from your target.

    http://www.spectergear.com/cst_sling.htm

    http://www.spectergear.com/shotgun_bsh.htm

first time you're practicing and you unlock the buckle and go from your good shoulder to your off shoulder, it's seamless. the sling also aids in firing with your off hand.

check it out, WELL worth the roughly 50 bucks i spent on it (for the sling and buttstock shell holder).
