ok i took my girl in to the vet to get fixed on friday of last week, when i went to pick her up, the vet had pulled 2 teeth. is that normal practice??

also he said she was in tip top shape, not a thing he could find wrong with her, but when he cut her open he found and extreme amount of fluid in her abdomen. and he doesn't know why it is there. so he gave her 1 antibotic tablet to take on saturday and he said to watch her really close. anyone know why all the fluid could be there, so i can ask him to check that???

one last thing he gave her a 10 day supply of rimadol, does she really need 10 days worth of pain killer???? i hate to dope her out if she doesn't need it. she is acting fine and not like she is in any pain what so ever.

Your vet just removed two of your dogs teeth without your consent, and with no explanation? Sure hope you didn't have to pay for that along with the spay? Have no idea about the fluid. I would have had to have much more information that that? What are you supposed to be watching for, they didn't say?

Otherwise, personally when I took Maddie in to be spayed the pain pills/ pain shot (for afterwards) were just an additional option that I didn't purchase. She was perfectly "normal" other than being a little tired and ready to get the heck out of there. If I would have opted for it, I know it would have been a waste since she wouldn't have needed them anyway. If you don't think she needs them, just don't give them to her. I surely wouldn't give them to her for 10 days.

yes he removed her some canine teeth, he said they were baby teeth that set behind her canine's??, and that is where tooth decay starts, and he charged me 15 dollars. he charged me for the pain pills also, 25 dollars, he said they were a must with all spays. so for 2 spays, (the baby teeth and pain pills for my pit), the pain pills for my rat terrior, and the rabies shots for them both, i paid him just a touch over 300 dollars.

that is ok, the money is no issue when it comes to my critters, it is the fluid he found in her abdomin that scares me. esp when he said he couldn't explain it. strange i tell ya!!!

  5. Pain Pills Are A Good Idea After Any Major Surgery But I Wouldnt Say They Are A Must And I Wouldnt Give Her Any After A Couple Days On Them,as Far As The Teeth Did You See Them Were They Really Baby Teeth Or Did He Just Rip Out Her Canines? Also He Should Have Called You And Asked You If You Wanted This Done And If You Had Noticed It Before You Brought Her In As far As Fluid I Dont Know For Sure What That Would Be But Ask Him And See If He Knows What It Might Be And Tell Him Next Time you Bring Her In Do Not Do Anything To Your Dog With Out Asking You First, Be Firm And Make Sure He Gets What You Are Saying Because Other Wise Who Knows What He Will Do U Might Drop Her Off For Anything And Come Back And Find Out He Put Her To Sleep With Out You Knowing It.

Removing the baby teeth is common, it's far better to do during the spay otherwise you would have to put her under again. It will save you money and the dog another dose of anesthesia, if the teeth did not fall out in time. They need to ask permission, usually while they have you sign the waver, but I guess they forgot and neglected to call you to ask. Hopefully they didn't charge you since they did not get your permission.

Please give ALL the pain meds. not just because it is a very serious and painful surgery. You DO want your dog dopey for a few days because you want her as calm as possible. She can do a lot of damage by bouncing around. Please keep her quiet. Rimadyl is very popular so don't worry.

Nothing like volunteering to help you out of some more of your cash, thats always quite nice of folks to help ya out like that, to me its the same darn thing as going to your mechanic and asking him to put new wiper blades on and when ya come back you've got 4 new tires also

Fluid in the abdomen, sometimes is caused by an infection. Hard to say where it came from, though. Hope all's better real soon.

yep. that is what it sounds like to me....LOL. But other than that i can do some research on the fluid. How many APBTs dose this vet see on a regular basis? I have heard of some stuff happening to our breed by vets who dont get alot in. And some that do get alot. I would deffinately keep an eye out (for the vet)

I just get tickled to hear this.....

"one last thing he gave her a 10 day supply of rimadol, does she really need 10 days worth of pain killer???? i hate to dope her out if she doesn't need it. she is acting fine and not like she is in any pain what so ever."

That's Because the pain management is working...lol :)

Is it realy a 10 day dose or was it scripted as a 5 day twice daily dose?

Ohhh, so he removed some retained baby teeth. As for if we do that, yes we would however we do NOT charge people for it when it's done in conjuction w/a spay/neuter (consider it a bonus for fixing the dog). The teeth can trap tons of bacteria & can cause numerous mouth/teeth problems. However, since you were charged for it & had no knowledge that it was going to be done, they should've contacted you first. A vet cannot do a procedure w/out your consent.

As for the fluid, without being there, seeing the dog, & seeing exactly where the fluid was contained at, there is no way for me, or anyone, to guess why it was there.

The vet where I worked does the same thing, but always with permission from the owner and at no charge if done in conjuction with another surgery.

no it was 1/2 a pill one time a day for 10 days. she only got 1 day and 1 night worth of the pills, that was friday night after the surgery and then saturday cause she moved really cautious.. then sunday she didn't have any and monday she didn't have any, and she acted 100% back to normal. i don't wanna dope my girl up for no reason...

thank you mia!! i wasn't sure if you could make a call or not on what it might have been without haven been there. thank you

When I was working as a vet asst many years ago, they never gave out pain pills....it was better for the dog to be uncomfortable so it would limit its movements. If it doesn't hurt, they are more likely to damage the surgical site, if its uncomfortable, they will limit their movements therefor putting less stress on the surgical site.

I think its time for you to find another vet....this one seems too interested in the financial side of the business. Does she have an appt. for a re-check/stitch removal? It would interesting to see if he charged you for that as well, it should also be included in the price of the spay, all follow ups from surgery used to be.

  15. Thats What I Was Wondering After I Posted Last Night 10 Days Is A Lot Of Pain Killer So I Was Thinking The Same Thing Ur Is It A 5 Day Twice Daily Dose.

yup we go back on next monday the 27th to have the stiches removed. goodness after 300 dollars, i hope he doesn't charge me anymore. :(

and yup i agree i think it is time to look for a new vet, when i was there to get phoenix's rabies shot last week while the girls were in surgery he charged a lady 15 dollars to trim her weinie dogs nails. so mabey he is in it for the money and not the love of the critters.

My vet charges (no joke) $150 to clip a dogs nails if you ask for it. The reason he does it-if you are going to own a dog, you need to be able to do the basic things yourself, such as clipping nails. He told me, he feels bad for doing it,but he figured people would wisen up and learn about their dogs a bit. Sadely, there are a few people who come in every week to get them clipped again. Its amazing how lazy and dependant some people are.

Sorry to go off topic-just wanted to share a possible reason why they charge so much for nail clippings.

The Vet I Worked At Would Charge To Pull Teeth, We Would Call Though To Let Them Know. It Was Good That He Took The Retained Teeth Out.

Rimadyl For 10 Days Is Not A Necessity. If I Were You Id Give It For The First Few Days Then Stop. Rimadyl Is Also An Anti-inflam, So It Is Good To Keep Some Swelling Down.

$300.00 For What You Got Sounds Pretty Good, The Clinic I Worked At Would Prob Be Around That, If Not A Little Higher.

I Had Some Problems W/animal Control (ggggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!) And They Took My Dogs When I Wasnt Home To The Vet (long Story Short, Dog Slipped Their Collar, And Was Going Thorugh A Kennel After Another Dog). The Vet They Took Them Too Did The Worst Stitch Job I Have Ever Seen, And Charged Me For A Bunch Of Bs. Like A "cleaning Fee" Though, When I Picked Up My Dogs, They Were Still Cover'd In Dried Blood And Dirt. After Paying Impound Fees And Other Bs, I Got The 600.00 Vet Bill. I Went In And Bitched, But They Wouldnt Budge.
I Seriously Went Home And Re-did The Worst Job I;ve Ever Seen.

Crappy Thing Is, I Had To Pay The Bill Since It Was In The Countys Name (in Other Words If I Didnt Pay, They Would Have The County Pay, Then The County Would Come After Me!)

So Basically Open Your Eyes (this Is To Everyone) And Look At What You Are Being Charged.
Though Not All Vets Are Sneaky... There Are Some Bad Ones That Charge You For Things You Dont Need...
