Help! Pup injured her leg

My 5 month old pup injured her leg rough housing.vet say she separated her growth plates (2) of them, vet says $2000 to fix properly. i can get it done but it would be a strain right now. she says it's pretty common, was wondering what some you more experienced dogmen think.

I'm not familiar with that type of injury but you don't want to mess up her growth at that young age...

I would get a second opinion, that can't hurt and might give another option.

Glad to hear you'll get her fixed up. It's a lot of $ to pay out but you're doing the right thing.

I'd get it done pretty quickly too as pups that age are growing quickly. You don't want her to end up with one leg shorter.

I also have a 5 month old pup and she is a wild ass little thing. She makes me cringe sometimes the way she runs around like her ass is on fire. So far she has not crashed into anything sharp but they are crazy at this age!

I think you are definitely doing right by your pup. It's worth it. I hope your pup heals nice, growth plates are the weakest part of the bone. Puppy's are so soft.

how did they determine it was separated growth plates? X-ray? I would ask for them to refer you to a specialist (ortho) for a 2nd opinion. Pretty young for surgical intervention. Best of luck

it's her right rear leg. yes there was an x-ray. and i am seeing an ortho.

thank you all for the best wishes. she's a good little dog, just loves everybody. got her from garner, don't know what she will turn out to be, but right now i couldn't be happier with her. except she could slow down a bit (even on 3 legs') and stop costing me extra money.

follow up on my pup... the procedure she had was called a TIBIAL TUBEROSITY AVULSION REPAIR. A mouth full huh? two pin where placed in the bone then wrapped with wire to keep the bone in placed while it heals, after that the leg was put in a hard cast. i was told to keep her pend up for two weeks, so the pins don't migrate from their positions. then the cast would be taken off. (with this breed i'm guessing that will be a breeze)

i was told one of the things to watch out for is a foul smell indicating an infection had set in. i was given antibiotic and a pain killer.

one of the things i would like to ask some of you more experienced gentlemen, is do you know of something you would give to help with the healing process. and should i maybe give her a little penicillin on top of the antibiotic the vet gave me to lessen the chance of infection.

No need to add to the antibiotics, make sure your keeping it clean and that will lessen chance of infection

Thanks for the update. I've not heard of the procedure but as long as it works that is the main thing.

One does not always think of half grown pups being somewhat fragile and that their bones, teeth, and bodies are still soft with growth. Here is a good link on the growth plates and how they can get damaged --

It's tough to keep them from jumping and being crazy. My pup is 6 months old now and she is still just as wild outside. Wants to run with the big dogs and to jump up and run like mad.

I don't have anything to add about the healing process and meds, but I would think it will be a tough job to keep her quiet for a few weeks so her leg can heal. Maybe lots of meaty raw bones and feeding her kibble in some sort of tough toy that she has to work at to get the food out. And after she is out of the pen, would you do short walks to help build up her muscles again?
