if you have been feeding the same brand for a while it could be a inconsistency with the batch.
Also changing the amount you feed like doubling the amount can do that as well with some foods.
its not the protein that does it.

I have been changing the amount but only by a half cup or so I genuinely think it's the inconsistent brand of dog food

If u just switched give it time well if the dog acts good. As others said it is likely the new feed give it a week or two. Doesn't too much protein makes for hard poop?

I believe you can have too much protein in a diet..A dog or human can only use so much, so the rest is just waste and harder for the dog to digest all of it...Its different if the dog needs that much protein.

A dog can get too much protein, especially in dry form. Their kidneys have to work harder to process the protein. If you think about it, raw meat is only about 15% protein and there is plenty of water in the meat to allow the kidneys to process it fairly easily. A dogs kidneys aren't biologically designed to process 40-50% dry protein. They are meant to process raw meat with low protein.
As for Blue Buffalo, they are apparently lying to people about what is actually in the food. The OP's dog is not the only one to experience health problems from consuming this food. I would definitely switch to a different food.

Wrong. Too much protein is harmful on the kidneys. Ever see dark yellow piss?
That is why wild animals have shorter life spans....too much protein.

like people dogs have "individual" systems/etc...some will find it easy to digest certain foods while others won't...the best thing for ya to do is try adding small amount of fibre first...if it don't work..keep him on his usaul food.. as said pups+very old dogs can find it hard to digest certain foods..had the shits problem like that with pups/etc not be able to digest,, so had to balance it right..it ain't hard to get right......g-luck

In my opinion a high protein diet in a young healthy active dog...thats being worked hard...wont be too harmful...dark yellow piss is a sign of dehydration...obviously a high protein diet in an older dog will will cause problems...(less active/weaker kidney function)...what is important is feeding a varied diet...increasing the protein content...as the dog gets worked harder

I think we all agree and know that a dog being worked needs more and better nutrition..The simple answer is you don't need that much protein for a dog on the chain ,that's not being worked. So we are not talking "keep"

Having higher protein in the dog's diet makes for harder or softer stools?

  19. bamaman

    bamaman GRCH Dog

Their is more than proteins that go into a well balanced.diet and 20 percent protein is not too high keystone and that's what I stay around for chain dogs .As far as the stool being harder or softer from too much protein, it would depend on the dog.
