I had to chuckle when I read about the water gun thing. My pit will stand there all day long or until you get tired of spraying him with the garden hose, squirt bottle or anything water related. He requires a bit more effort to get his attention, but when you have it you have it.

  3. I've seen someone use a BB gun to stop them from barking (Dobermans). I've seen maniacs beat there dogs. I've also seen the old rub the dogs nose in it when trying to house break. Have these things worked? Yes. As far as the hitting thing goes, I've done it, I really don't take it to the extreme nor do i condone it.

their own mom and dad will often physically discipline them not to mention the alfa male and female wolf(u in your own home i hope)will physically discipline lesser pack members lightly of course but physically none the less. if it works for them and they speak the language the what u think.i know some pretty damn intelligent dogs but i aint met none that can speak english

most ppl i seen hit a dog do it compulsively. because it releases pressure they have inside. they are mad and they feel better after having hit. Some may even feel strong.
who is it that hits a dog when very calm, cause he knows or wants to believe its the best correction?
imo dumbness, lack of self control will make you hit a dog or a child.
not saying hiting doesn't work imo its just looking for an easy way.

the hitting shouldnt be punishment for a dog just a way to get their attention so they focus.like when u pop slap u in the head when he trying to teach u something(BOY pay attention slap upside the head)or the way u might have to slap a person going hysterical to calm them down so they can focus on escaping danger or whatever or the way the alpha wolf might have to give a packmember a quick mouthing for getting to exited about a kill and forgets they place.there r plenty of wild mammal who physically discipline they young

6sN7s lol @ zenmaster I get angry at times for sure and I know it takes away my lucidity.

I don't feel the need to hit a dog, I'll lift a pup from the ground, grab it by the skin on the neck and shake it a little in front of my face with a loud voice.
Only once had to kick a dog in the face. Was biking with the dog and at one point he would get mad at my shoes. Tried to warn the dog, yelled at him, stopped, with no success. when he went for my shoe I kicked him hard so he knew it was no game.
IMO many situations could be handled without hitting the dog and would get better results.

I've often wondered what I would do if a dog i had would show signs of dominance, showing teeth etc...

  9. I once saw something that I should interject here. I knew someone that had a red boy/ red boy male that was well bred. He was 3 months or so and had to be kept in the house for a time. Well, the dog got into the owners shoes and went wild. We are not talking a pair of Timberland's. These were shoes that a professional wears everyday to work. Well, the professional came home and grabbed the one that the dog had in its mouth and beat this dog like you would not believe.

When the owner stopped to catch his breath and pick up the shoes, the dog proceeded to lick his face and wag his tale like you would not believe. Funny thing, the dog never chewed a pair of dress shoes again. Who was it that said that they don't understand a little physical discipline?

I often find that if a man (or woman) has to physically correct their dog they dot know enough about said dog to be owning it. With that said though, with some dogs it's sometimes necessary especially if the correction is exa use of behavior around kids. Out of all the dogs I've ever been responsible for I've never had one that didn't respond to a non physical correction enough to make me "hit" it. If you had that dog since it was a pup then you should have trained it properly so that you don't need to hit its nose/arse or spray a pissing hose in its face.

I'll tell you a story about a dog beater and his dog. My friends step dad had two dogs, one a SBT (male) and one a pit bull (bitch). He was a little Irish man and was a bit of a drinker but was always driving a van around (pissed). I couldn't work this man out cause those dogs would go everywhere with him but he seemed to hate them. Lovely dogs the pair of them but had bad anxiety and skiddish. He wasn't too bad to the bitch but he'd hit the dog all the time. The dig was also petrified of carrier bags, I don't want to know why. Anyway, me and my friend grew apart over the past few years so I didn't see the dogs at all. Seen my friend about a year ago and asked about David and his dogs and he told me that the dog took two of the old bastards fingers off. I had to smile but I was very surprised cause those dogs were petrified of him.

I know people that hit their dogs but these dogs are serious dogs never by hand though seems as though the discipline makes a smater dog that listens and respects its owner but they are not afraid in the least lil bit

The dogs them selves are very dominant types of dogs run them or they run you

I wear a cap year round. All my dogs I can take my cap off and they start shaking their head and backing up. For the most part I don't think I have swatted any of them more than 3 times. It isn't a real physical lick but it stings like hell. I do my best not to get truely physical with a dog but it has happend.

Frank - While I agree it's important to have your dog know its place, discipline doesn't need to be of the physical type. It's much easier to train them where a command is what they respond to rather than a smack. I don't want my dogs to be shot feared of me but I damn sure want them to respect me and that's the big difference here. A dog may respond to you out of fear or out of respect and I'd much rather the latter.

My other problem with this is that once someone justifies correcting the dog physically, they may justify just beating the dog out of frustration.

I also respect a dogman who has full control and respect from their dog and have never took to hitting the dog much more than one who has to hit it. I'm not being fluffy by having this view I just think its ridiculous. What's gunna hurt my dogs more? A tap on the nose/arse or time out away from me? Well I'll tell you it's the latter. My attention is a very special thing to them, more so than toys but not as special as food. I take something they love away after they've done something they know is wrong and they learn very very quickly. Like I said previously, I'd you've had your dog since a pup you should have trained it to the point you don't need to smack the shit out of it. I got my bitch when she was 2 and I had no idea of her background except that she had quite an abusive previous owner. This dog had a handful of issues I had to work with her through. Now if some of the people posting in this thread had my bitch, they'd probably hit her as a correction for se of the things she used to do and that's the worrying part.

Getting a dogs attention is whats needed. Some make take a little harder swat than others. Some no swat will cure lol.Sometimes you just got to let em be.I had a old timer tell me he said I can break em from anything. He said the only thing I could never break one from is that excitment they get when they are ready to go.He was speaking of his family of dogs though. So not all familys r the same way. This guy is very good with animals, best I have saw.People will bring thier horses that they cant break and he will break them. And he is the only man I ever saw that would keep a horse on a chain spot lol.

all you need is time, patience and food. I dont even talk to my dogs....... they understand hand signals. If they get confused they miss a meal. But you have to spend time waiting for the exact moment to correct their behaviour as the dont understand pass misdemeanors.

Having a house dog is easier to train as there is more opportunity to modify and correct. But I dont want a pet nor does the family after feeding and scooping a yard full of crazy ass bulldawgs. lol.

Chain dogs can trash their spot as much as they like dont bother me none.

There are special circumstances that would call for it but if doing it because u need a punching bag then you don't need any animals.

Never anywhere near the face, maybe the backend if it was the ONLY way I could get my point across. But I can get my point across alot better many other ways without touching the dog. I don't see much positive that can come from it.imo

I was reading through a closed thread on here about a food aggressive dog. The majority of "advice given" was to beat the dog. One idiot went and told the OP to stand on the damn thing and guess whos advice he took? Yep, the dog stamper. Be careful what you write on the Internet and more importantly how you get your point across. Telling someone to hit their dog and meaning a light hit on the back could end up with a dog getting beaten to an inch of its life. It's not cool and it's not tough beating in a dog. A dogman loses respect from me if he does that.

I use my voice most of the time.I talk to them calm and when I raise my voice they listen pretty good...I got a couple thats like yea fuck you lol.I have hit but I never do it hard, just hard enough to re enforce the raising of my voice on a hard headed one..It works for me pretty good. And pretty good is good enough for me as far as that goes.
