When I saw this guy as a pup for the first time I thought "those mf'ers only cropped his ears to help hide the bird dog." LOL

we just got her this week, if I didn't tell people she is a apbt she would easily pass for a German shorthair. She is our first apbt, such a sweetheart.

I also, heard from the 'horses mouth' stories of crosses getting into the lines...does'nt surprise me because it was a matter of ..."if they can win in good company, what does it matter"?
Purists(breeders) in the day would'nt have any part of it, mainly because of the time it would take to go through generations of breedings...but lots of accidental(?) crossed blood made it into the main stream, helped along by the popularity in the breed with shows etc, and the illegality of the original use.
The (pure) blood I have seen that produced these ticked dogs..always came with same colored skin and not just the fur(more noticeable when wet, as someone mentioned) and to me that is freckled...?

Can the coloration ...eg: ticked, roan etc..show without a change in skin color...?

Does anyone have any more info on this as everything I have read talks of fur color but says nothing of the hide.

I see this is an old, old thread, but let me just say that color consciousness can get a little absurd. Back in the day, there were strangely marked dogs such as GR CH Lucky Strike that was ticked in the white of his markings. Many, more or less teasingly and affectionately called him "The bird dog", but everyone also knew he was all bulldog and that his reference to his looks was only to be catch phrasing and for fun.

Today, with the influence of the net, many take it all much too seriously.

The only dogs that should be suspect are the ones folks have bred SPECIFICALLY for CERTAIN COLORS AND MARKINGS. Otherwise, barring some cross bred dog with another breed, it really shouldn't be so important, as has been seen with many great dogs who had unique coloration/markings.

Another term I never heard or saw used to describe some dogs until the net and swarms of less than serious dog owners, is pied or piebald. Not needing to categorize or label dogs with such fervor as we seem to want to do today, dog men and women simply called them "Open-marked" dogs. Eg. Stompanato, Alvin The Dog, and many other dogs of renown. I only ever heard the bald eagle referred to as piebald.....which incidentally, is how it got its name "Bald Eagle", not because its head looked bald. LOL

I guess some things are just signs of the times. I have little qualm with it.....unless a term is derived from lack of knowledge and blatant ignorance. We do see these things on the net all too often, IMO. It's going to happen, yet what issue I have with that is when myth and misinformation hamper the young and learning. My two cents. T.

I haven't had any ticking in my bulldogs..But strangely enough I have it in my Jack Russell Terriers and I even had some come out with ears standing straight up with the ticking.

For some reason this thread reminds me of another thread where someone thought he had a ticked colored Nigerino bred dog in which I think turned out to be a Nigerino/bird dog cross LMAO.
