How Many Reasons do YOU need to breed two specific dogs together?

As the title suggest i want to know what everyone's INDIVIDUAL reasoning is behind breeding a dog and a bitch together and how many positive and negative traits are you taking into consideration? There is no right or wrong answer so everyone that has ever done a breeding can answer this one.

Setting aside severe quirks or malformations, I have but one reason to breed a dog.

Rotfl! That, my friend, is without a doubt the most proven way to have successful breedings.

Bounty, I don't have much experience in breeding as the one I did this year has been the only breeding I have done, but there are many things I looked for while considering all my possible options. Obviously performance ranks at the top. A well rounded animal not only in performance, but also from solid consistent families/strains of good breeding is a concern also. I also feel if you make a breeding make it from dogs you enjoy keeping..I'm sure I'm not the only one that has personal preferences on dogs regarding their yard manners n other physical aspects. I guess I just try to look for the complete overall package in both animals which varies greatly between each individual bulldog person. Not a great response as I don't have a way with words like TDK, but I'm sure you get the gist.

Thanks for an honest reply. I believe all good breeders would go through such a thought process. I think once you are established it would be fair to say that all the dogs on your yard are breed worthy and not much thought is needed.

Been thinking about the big shit thing and realized breeding dogs that do big shits is as vague as breeding for gameness, like how do you decide whats a big shitter? Do you measure the food fed, then measure the poo size? Do you compare the weight of the poo to the weight of the dog and work out a optimum ratio that you try to improve with every generation? do you measure the diameter of the poo or is it better to go for length?

I have these and many other questions, so TDK can you help with your infinite wisdom?

That's a good (AND HONEST) answer, amigo Peon. We all do differ as to certain preferences. My first answer was not meant to be slighting the question nor joking, also. I meant it just as one might read it. Aside from any obviously genetically promulgated and severe quirks, it's gameness.

I was in convo with Bill when he was writing that article. We were partners at the time. Long, long time ago. We had some great times.

Pretty obvious to see that he and I totally concur on what he wrote, if you've read a few of the things I've banged out on the keypad here on the board.

LOL I'm very old school. I just eyeball it. Squirts and other forms of less than whole, healthy poop don't qualify. When you've seen as much dog poo as I have, you can just see it. Another way would be to just line up crap from every dog and label them. Pick the biggest and they might really produce some hell for you. I have yet to see scales that specify one of their uses as weighing shit. Might have to try a manure manufacturing company for that. LMAO

Peon, my friend, you express things just fine. I always understand it clearly.

All in all, Bounty, it's all a matter of gameness here, and that is always measured in shit size.

Broken down perfect, peon. Great post, amigo. Not many on here can word things the way T does, I wish I could as well. I know I've said it more than once.

TDK, so what if you have a 30lb bitch that produces the second biggest shit and the biggest shit is from a 60lb bitch. Which do you breed too? And what if on the previous day one of your dogs digs up an old bone and eats it. That shit will be huge and therefore giving that dog breeding rights over lets say a natural big shitter. Then what if your neighbor knows your selection criteria and keeps throwing food to one of your smaller shitters, to hamper your breeding program. So many possibilities, this big shitter breeding program is too confusing for me.

I'll just stick to breeding because i have a feeling about it.

You may try the big shitter philosophy.I hear he's been pretty successful over the years.

LOL you bring up some valid scenarios. Everything is relative as to amount of shit and the size of the dog. No problem there. Problem 2: No problem there either. Mine are spoiled and won't eat old bones. Problem 3, the neighbor interference: I've found that cure too. I have no neighbors. LOL

One has to truly arrange his dog environment tactfully in order to never sacrifice the true criteria for judging gameness. BIG SHITS! I saw one today I thought would take a c section to get out, but I also breed them with expandable assholes. So, no problem there. LMAO
