Lol question sounds silly but I'll be going hunting in a forest out in the middle of nowhere with the dog off leash to locate and trail coons and what not. I don't him to bolt off if something catches his attention and lose the dog. I never hunt with a dog before but its also never too late to learn.

On big hunts, with more than 30 dogs, there are allways 1 or 2 dogs that don't come back. They have an adress card at the collar, if somebody find them.
The week before the season begins, I sound the horn of my car when I feed them. When I sound the horn after hunting, they are coming for food. Also I don't feed them one day before hunting.

I know some hunters use an GPS tracking device on their collars and a Garmin hand held device. Make sure your dog id up to date with shots and what not.

I spend alot of time in the woods and I cant tell you how many hounds and catch dogs ive found..some had info on them and some did not..I found a red nose female one time she was a catch dog..I havent figured out how they used her must have been solo. She was fight crazy bitch.I used her solo and I never saw a hog throw her no matter the size, they would toss her all up in the air and she wouldnt let go.Never did I find her owner and I kept her.But ive found all sorts of dogs in the middle of no where.

Thats a good tip I'm going to give that a try. What are some reasons the dog doesn't return? Are they actually lost or do they not want to return for whatever reason it might be? About how far can they hear the sound of the horn? This is a forest with thick vegetation in some parts.

Its a patterdale terrier, I never had one before but I've heard that they like to run off every chance they get. Lol funny how you said that story. Dog said he ain't going back no mo.

Yes he's only a pup right now but I will be doing just that when he gets older.

Thanks I will have to look into that. I've seen patterdales with teathers on their collars while underground so they can be located. Never thought about using it in the woods.

Lol lucky guy. I wish I can say I even found one while in the middle of nowhere but hunting with dogs isnt so popular around my neck of the woods.

...if he is still a pup bring hiim out, now, with an older dog even if ya want to put him on a long-long-lead...tie him collar-to collar with an old slower experinced bitch for example,an easy going one ,,but do while he's young an he might turn out to be one off your best...???????

Thats a great idea I will have to try that this spring. I've got buddies with a few good dogs I have in mind. I'm going to get a dog tracker to be extra safe. I've got a gould/nuttall pup from a good dogman here where I live, I expect him to be a good dog and don't want to risk losing him. Hopefully this will be my best dog yet. Cheers!

Garmin 220 or 320 and tracking collar. Another starter is a long check cord and a snack. Let the dog do its thing then call and snack. Then add distraction. Cow horns or calls at feed time just before u feed works. If ur dog is high prey drive no amount of calling may work. In this case everyday when u get home put ur dirty shirt in its dog house or kennel or wherever it sleeps. Change out every day with a new dirty shirt. In the case u lose ur dog lay ur shirt down on the ground where u parked or near there. Basically somewhere u can check where u were hunting. Keep going back checking the shirt replacing every time. U will normally find ur dog sleeping on ur shirt.

Tracking collars are good if they stay on and the batteries don't die. You want to keep a dog from running off, keep them on a leash till it's time for them to go. I personally wouldn't let my dog go without a leash or an area I know he/she isn't going to go far. Rock salt and a 12 gauge pump work well also.

Good solid advice Dunlap...and when your finished he go right back on the leash.

  19. the way i start all my patterdale pups is with 8 months of strict obedience training before i even start working woods or creeks with them. I work them on long lines in open grass pasture where i set up hay stacks or wood piles or even dig a few 2foot holes for them to find a rabbit fur in or some other hide or feather or whatever species you are wanting the dog to learn to target. after the pup learns to respect the distance of the long line and knows the basic "come, sit, stay, drop/dead, get em, find em" commands then I will let the dog off line with an older trained dog or with no other dogs at all. and make sure to do this the first couple months in areas where you arent likely to run into many critters. sounds dumb but training a dog to distance himself within earshot of its owner makes all the difference in the world. I can take my dogs to the store and never have them on a leash. you will get out what you put in i guarantee it.
