    "Hunter Red"

Hunter Red was originally owned by James C., I spoke to him about Hunter Red about a year back, and he said that he sold Hunter Red to Thomas S. because he was a poor quality match dog.

Thomas subsequently owned the dog for quite a while and the stud fee was fairly low, around $300.US if my memory is correct. He was bred a lot, some say over 200 times. He has produced well thought with many 1 and 2 time winners to his credit plus a couple of Champions. Thomas later sold him to the Tennessean along with some excellent dogs that Thomas had Championed and Grand Championed from Robert H. stock. Robert H. got rid of most of his yard when he went over to Iraq during the Gulf War. Who new such an exceptional litter would have been produced out of Robert's old ROM Booger bitch. Anyways this is a little off topic, but somewhat related.

The Tennessean consequently raised the stud fee price for Hunter Red to $1000.US. This is good and bad, first the good. Higher stud fee will get rid of a lot of people who are just looking to peddle paper and will bring in the more serious dogman with good proven bitches. The bad is that some will think that a high stud fee means a grat producer. I personally think Hunter Red is a very good producer, who will show better offspring now, because he is being bred to better bitches. Hunter Red also had two excellent brothers. One is the ROM Deacon dog and the dead game Ch. Radar Man.

Deacon unlike Hunter Red was a match quality dog, and has produced exceptionally well considering the number of breedings that were made with him. Some say ROM is not an indication of producing ability, that it could be just a lucky litter. That's true, but Deacon has also produced the multi winning Don King dog, and a number of 1 and 2 time winners. Deacon is also only the second Red Boy male to reach ROM status. the first was Yellow John. Hunter Reds main breeding areas were the southern states, while Deacon was bred in the more northern states. It is true that some would say the Red Boy dogs are soft mouth dogs, but there is no doubt about their gameness. Mouth can always be added. Gameness should still be the primary concern. A lot more could be said about these dogs, so I hope someone will jump in and continue this.

Hunter Red was bought as a 4 months old pup by R. Duprel from K. Marlowe. He raised him, schooled him out and put the check on him. Rodney D. had a kidney transplant and did not expect to live so J. Crenshaw took all his dogs. He registered him behind his name and did the marketing on him.
Later Kamakazee kennel (Mike G. and Mike W.) bought Hunter Red from Tom S. who had him then and crossed the Red Boy blood on their Eli blood with 1/8 Jeep.
Mike told me in his words couldn't whip a duck but was checked real hard and was a deep game dog.

There is much more Duprel bred dogs in Crenshaw's dogs as it shows.

... It on paper and most do NOT understand any way.
For example the Charlie B blood from R. Duprel. Lady Moriah was Rodney's Skeet and brother Big Casey, Duprel's Jill ROM. Many other dogs with other names behind the J. Crenshaw dogs. Rodney told me he out-crossed Classy on HIS Hunter Red dog to slow down the Charlie B dogs. They were so strong, fast and fought at such a destroying nature breaking things each bite. Even with this type they were still bred for the game dog.
The dog men from the southern part of the USA, this was Boudreaux Cajun Country, many bred those dogs exclusively for destruction, but R. Duprel took a different route with his Charlie B and made them show game.

... R. Duprel never was interested in the market, but J. Crenshaw is and a clear understanding such as I have I can tell you that R. Duprel is the factor behind many of the best dogs shown by J.C. Some do NOT show Duprel's name even.

Never read that before thanks for sharing. Years ago, before I realized how much paper hanging went and I really studied pedigrees, I noticed Charlie B's name behind a lot of serious dogs.

From private letters I received years ago (2001-2006) when all of them mentioned were still around. Just a small part ... and all that people can see is Crenshaw.

    ...
James C. used B. Clouse bitches and bred them to Rascal more than they show and knowing which is a key. The Trapper out-cross is a good example and if you recall I offered to take you thru the door. I agree with your view NOT breeding to dogs that quit. This is a foregone conclusion for the breed of game dogs. Tom S. had Bo when he died and matched him twice. He was in shock. He also had Hunter Red and sold him to my friend Mike (Wilder) that had Rodney Duprel's dog Trapper on his yard and made the Anna breeding.

T.S. beleives Bo is the best dog he ever saw. He threw good dogs because of the bitches bred to his son Jeep. Red Boy threw because of the bitches bred down from his sons. The best producing bitch is Peaches, the dam of Hunter Red and Deacon. Rascal threw because of Honeybunch primarily. Bo is not bred like he shows. Honeybunch is NOT bred like she shows. I made comment before that very few dogs are bred like they show. However, this does not change the fact if a dog quits.
What does change the perspective of the facts is the manner in which a dog quits. This and how his son-g-son + gg grandsons prove out. Also when we see Bullyson this does NOT necessarily mean the Bullyson dog at all. Please do NOT misunderstand me, I am not the greatest fan of any out-cross but when a out-cross start to become more necessity than desire the choices need to be made. I NOT only consider the blood, the dog, but the man. It is now very hard for a in-bred game dog to win consistantly unless we pick + choose.
We are reaching a time where such dogs losing ability, stamina that the rough dogs don't let gameness come into view. Also the deep game dog does not have the re-coup power to survive the destruction after he is picked up to save him. All of this is why the old-timers feared out-cross. When I was young I thought I would live forever. I thought my dogs would be young forever. Now my grandson dogs are dead and the out-cross is here. ...
