Basically anything beef or chicken. I think the fatty cuts work best. One, the dogs thrive on the fat content, and two, usually the fattier cuts are cheaper. Cheaper sounds "cheap" but as of the number of dogs go up it can be a factor.

Lots of butcher shops have a 'scrap box', which is all the cuts they are going to throw out anyway. Basically tidbits of this and that, which usually end up in their garbage. Ask about that.

More specific, I feed a lot of cow cheek. It is a nice fatty cut. Some shops trim meats off the bone and those meaty bones are left over, lots of time finding their way into that scrap box.

    Best of luck. S

Yes da boss, ive fed that for about 3 years. Ive since stepped up my resources and feed beef innards instead of rice and alternate eggs & sardines, I also feed backs instead of quarters now

Slim, I wish I knew your butcher shops! The ones around here, I'm lucky to get "scraps". They say they add lean meat to it and make sausage and hamburgers with it. They don't throw away anything. I recently moved out to the country and I'm looking for new resources now.

And some butcher shops won't sell me "scraps" because of health department rules but some will.

deer season around the corner, check out some processors. Treez check to see if there is a local or texas hunting group on FB. I joined a local one and people give away rabbits (you may have to dispatch yourself), meat, etc.

I'll look into that. Here soon I'll be raising my own chickens and rabbits for meat but I'm always up for new/more connects. Good lookin!

The deer processors I've talked to said they only have bones leftover and it's illegal to sell any wild game meat, they say.

who really follows all the laws? lol, sure it's illegal to "sell" but they may turn a blind eye while you dig through barrels. i'd ask the next worker there until you get the answer you want.

Sounds good. How many times have you done that and got results? Exactly.

not at a processor, but i've had some luck with a couple butchers i've found that speak english lol. Mostly bone in scraps, machine cut which i am a little hesitant to feed. I do see a lot of people recommending those avenues on raw feeding groups often. Just figured i'd pass the info along.

Definitely worth passing on, I was just saying it doesn't happen that easily. I've tried and still try and I have yet to have anybody sell to me after they said no. And I've tried multiple times.

just ask them for the bones and you can trim the meat off . look for areas that process a lot of deer .

Once my pup gets used to his raw diet I would love to get my hands on some venison.
A lot of people give raw eggs, but I never could with my older dog. He never liked raw eggs so I came up with a nice little method of soft boiling eggs so that the yolk is nice and runny every time. No guessing, no messing with extra utensils and things.
Drop the egg in boiling water for 6 to 7 min, yank it off the element and run water over it a bit. Then Since my dog refused to eat the shell I had to become a master at peeling the soft boiled egg. So he used to get those perfect whole soft boiled egg gems of pureness every day! My new pup gobbles up whole raw eggs shell and all though. Just thought someone may find this little tip useful.

This is very true. I did have a hook up at the local Food Lion. Pretty much had it going on for quite some time. Some days I could land as much as 10-15 lbs. 0f meats. Then one day (as luck would have it) I was making a pick up and there was a district manager in the store. He freaked. That was the end of the hook up because he said it was possible someone would actually go home eat the scraps, get sick and then sue the grocery store. It is part of the times in which we live. I just cut up about 20lbs. of deer meat. It was given to me by a buddy who had some freezer problems. I lucked out there. But that is another avenue. Talk to/meet up with some of the local hunters. Tell them what you are looking for. Lots of them do not keep all of the deer. The neck meat is no a popular cut but it is a dense meat. If a front shoulder is hit up with buck shot they will not mess with it. Cutting it up in small chunks will help find the lead shot and it will quite a bit of meat that would end up in a scrap pile or burn hole.

Sometimes all one needs is a little bit of creativity. We only have two butcher shops and I buy out meats from them just to get in good with the guy to get his scraps. Some days he has some, some days he does not. Either way I get a mongo steak to cook on the grill.

Lots of the deer processors will give the bones and what nots away so it will be that much less they have to throw away.

Be creative. Best of luck. S

Find a private butcher. Not the grocery store or shop type butchers, but the guys that literally come to ur house...shoot your cow, butcher onsite & leave with the innards/extras. I get about 300 lbs of innards each trip I make. Also... get on the hunting forums...talk to the locals...
