Is False Pregnancy Common???

I was just curious...my dog just got out of her 1st heat like a few weeks ago...well me and my sis have noticed that her nipples were getting bigger and she says her mammory glands are swelling up...does that mean she could be pregnant? I remember reading on here somewhere that dogs do have false pregnancys and they may expierence signs of being pregnant and are not really pregnant. If she is I guess me keeping a really close eye on her wasn't close enough.

Not sure really how COMMON they are, but they do happen. Is there a chance that your bitch may have gotten pregnant?? I have had a bitch have a false pregnancy, but we had bred her, it didn't take but she went thru some changes like she was pregnant.

I had a gyp do that after her first heat. I had her locked up and made sure nothing could get to her. Her glands swole up and started to take shape a little then they went back down and all was normal again.

Well...I did keep her with all the time while she was in heat..except one time...but she never showed any signs of reception (the whole tail flippin to the side thing) so should I just wait it out and see what happens?

Thats all I can suggest just give it time. If you ask a vet most of them will tell you that if she is bred all you can do is have her spayed to abort the pups or atleast this is the experience I had when I had my first scare lol

GRRR...I dont know about aborting puppies...that seems kinda grotesque. Well if she is...will that mess her up later on with any purebred pups she may have? When I think about it...the only way she could of got ahold of was when I stayed at a friends one night and I chained her outside to use the bathroom. And her mom who lives next door has a basset hound...YIPEEE...so he would be the only one..but she was only out there for a minute. So...I dunno Im just kinda freakin out about it...lol...I dont want PitBull/ Basset Hound Puppies!!!!

I'm not sure how common it is either but I have a bitch that did that to me also. It was her first heat cycle, she was about 9 months I think and she went through all the signs of being pregnant but it turned out she wasnt. Her nipples got bigger and she stayed swollen in the back and everything. You will know for sure in about another week maybe 2 weeks, because if she is pregnant her tits should start to fill with milk.

I am sorry if I bothered any on with the aborting statement. When I was looking I was asking my vet if they had a "morning after pill" for dogs like they do for humans. No if she is bred it will not have any affect on her have pure bred pups later on down the road. That is unless there are complications in the birthing process that could carry on prove to be problems in the future, but that is a risk that is taken with every breeding. One never knows when a c section will be needed or other situations of that nature. I would reckomend if she is bred just take it as a lesson learned and place the pups in some good loving homes.

I had one female that would have a false preg. every heat. I would say it is fairly common.

I think I remember reading about it in The Complete Game Dog but I'm not sure. It's probably more common than we would think.

I have a time or 4. It's some what common of an issue. They say about 1/2 of all bitches will experience one in their lifetime. Don't necessarily need to do anything for it. In most cases, things will subside in 7 to 21 days on their own.

I myself cut their water intake in half for about a week. Use warm compresses on the teats a few times a day and work her. They tend to snap right back in shape..
