The tiny terrier in his pic sure could pass for a black Fell/Patterdale with a strangely carried tail, and Black was a rat catcher who pioneered the production of fancy (pet) rats and a catcher of rats for the pit. I know zip about Fell Terrier history, so Fell Terrier people, was he a breeder of what nowadays are called black Fell Terriers (perhaps proto-Patterdales)? Were Fell Terriers ever brought to London?

    From wiki's article:

Black had a number of sidelines beyond rats, including fishing (for food and supplying aquaria), bird catching and taxidermy. He was also an accomplished dog breeder. He told Mayhew: "I had a little rat dog—a black tan terrier of the name of Billy—which was the greatest stock dog in London of that day. He is the father of the greatest portion of the small black tan dogs in London now [...]. [...] I've been offered a sovereign a-pound for some of my little terriers, but it wouldn't pay me at that price, for they weren't heavier than two or three pounds. I once sold one of the dogs, of this same strain, for fourteen pounds, to the Austrian Ambassador. [...]; in fact, my terrier dog was known to all the London fancy. As rat-killing dogs, there's no equal to that strain of black tan terriers."

Going by the location, Black may be referring to the old smooth-coated Black and Tan Terrier, but the size and shape are what makes me think proto-Patterdale Terrier. Besides, he refers to a particular strain of black and tan terriers, perhaps to distinguish between his dogs and smooth-coated whip-tailed Black and Tan Terriers (e.g. future Manchester Terriers). Even today black and tan Fell Terriers are called "Black and Tan Terriers" (at least according to wiki's article: Black and Tan Terrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) All the Patterdales I have met were so small I could pick them up in one arm. The photo is of a black and tan hybrid Fell Terrier.

Fell Terrier fanciers, you know more about the history than I do, what say you?
