Auto body man i had a bad experience one time the guy didn't match up the paint like i mean red and blue when it was suppose to be all red. So he gave it to me for free. For one year it looked like i had a clown car. BamBaclot.

I grew up in a custom bodyshop. I did my share of bodywork, fab work and before i got out of it, i was a painter for years.

This is one of the last cars i painted.

Very nice work there my friend! Very nice indeed! So many people think when they take a car to a shop that we wave a magic wand and everything just magically happens. Very few truly know the time and patience our craft demands. Many times I've thought about pursuing other more lucrative ventures, but I don't think it's something I'll ever give up completely.

Thanks and i know what you mean. The smaller family shops took a huge hit with the insurance companies years ago so things slowed down. We was mainly doing Barret Jackson cars toward the end for a couple other car guys that had money. One of the last builds we did that took 1st place at Cavalcade was a nut and bolt resto on a 66 L79 all matching numbers Nova. Now that? That took almost a year to get done but it brought $110K at Barret Jackson and won the Cavalcade. I keep thinking i ordered in Sickens for the base and clear on that one. We even did lead work on the seams, just like they did at the plant on Detroit.

This is probably one of the rarest cars we did. An old convertible Duesenberg, i keep thinking it sold for like 1.5 million?

We used to mix our own from formulas but a real painter knows how to get the paint even closer and pull a good blend. A lot of times trying to match old colors was a bitch, especially with the Dupont system, i hated Dupont for years, especially there mid grade base coats, it started getting thinner and thinner to where it took 4 or 5 coats just for coverage.

As a teacher and historian I tend to focus more on the victims of history, rather than the executioners.

In the pharmaceutical industry. The one where you only get paid weekly, it is inside with climate control, and the customers and competitors are a lot less seedy. Not the other one with the fast money, lots of competition and pending all-expense paid state sponsored extended vacation.
