Well said mag, BUT the main problem is a lot of people DO UNDERESTIMATE these type of dogs BECAUSE majority of them never had the EXPERIENCE of dealing with a super determined dog. So most people DO NOT KNOW what is considered a really SECURE set up. Most people usually learn the hard way with accidents and then work there way up to a more secure set up, but why do it ass backwards and get into a lot of accidents? why take the risk? LOL Every dog of this breed should be treated as if it is a very determined escape artist even if he never tried to escape from any set up. Its funny how when people say oh his dog never ever tried to escape from a commercial weak grade Walmart,Kmart, lowe's,home depot kennel LOL, OR dont worry my dog was raised in there from a pup and never ever tried to break out of his Saran Wrap enclosure LMAOROTF. Now almost nothing is 100 percent secure or fool proof but you can keep the percentages higher in your favor with the less chances of escape by doing it the RIGHT WAY. A responsible owner is one who has the most securest set up regardless if the dog is a escape artist or not.Do it right the first time. Now that peoples is the frickin truth of reality LOL.

A chain setup inside the kennel will prevent your Houdini's from escape. I like boogies idea of the gravel flooring. I have mud issues and I'm thinking that would fix it.

Looks good AGK. The rock should help. When you're cleaning up you would probably need to rake the rock down because the chain drag will pile it up.

the key with using wood decking for kennels is pressure treated lumber that is stained. my clean up is as easy as spraying the decks off with a hose and raking up the poop from the ground and i dont have any issues with sick dogs.

Wood holds bacteria...as can gravel or concrete. But, without a doubt, the easiest to clean, disinfect, and keep clean is concrete. Dogs can mash crap into lower gravel. You scoop up the top obvious crap, but what about what is underneath. It gets stirred up. Washing it doesn't eliminate it all. It helps...sure...but I have seen many of such set ups after a year or more turn into a crap pit (if dogs are kept in them continuously). Gravel requires extensive DAILY maintenance or removing dirty gravel (and occasionally replacing gravel lost with new clean gravel). I think concrete is better myself. Cleaning yes...maintenance no.

As far as fencing goes...do not ever trust 11 gauge or less AND do not trust aluminum tie down wire. I use 9 gauge with step up with steel tie downs at LEST every other link. If a dog feels weakness in the kennel, they will work that area. All areas must be tight.

Here are some pictures of some of my kennels. I have others that are completely covered with sheet metal roofing & welded wire on the open part of the top for "jumpers".

i agree with you about the wood decking ...i am a joiner and work on domestic properties etc ...we allways renew toilet floors and the piss has not only soaked into the boards but the joists aswell ...even if you clean it the urine has still soaked into the boards which i tend to think will happen with the decking etc ...the gravel i also think is a bad idea as like mentioned it doesn't matter how much you clean it there is still bits get trapped and has nowhere to go but the bottom. ground that is washed time after time with no where to drain becomes rancid and stinks... i have flag stones in mine but i still think the best is concrete by a long shot ! but as they say each to their own

the only plus side with decking is it is pressure treated so it might not soak in as much ?

Wood or concrete both will absorb liquid unless its sealed. Thats what the decking boards are treated for. Insects,mold,bacteria........... If they're not kept sealed they will start to lose they're efectiveness after a few years though. Being pressure treated doesnt keep it from absorbing. The pressure they apply is to push/force the chemicals into the wood thoroughly so there is less time involved than letting it soak in.

Quick question. At what age could you put a pup in a kennel like this (for 5 to 8 hrs)? Acquaintance of mine is making a similar setup for a 9 wk old Doberman.

  10. I've had 12 week old puppies in them before.

That is quite a chew job! I had to laugh. I spent so much time repairing the damage on kennels, I began to think it was a full time job. Not any more. We had a Bolio dog that would not ride in a crate, period. You had to ride him up front with you or he would hurt himself. these dogs just like things the way THEY like them. That is a beauty of a dog house and if you cover it with metal, if they cant get a toothhold it should survive. If you built that you are quite good at that. I am not a carpenter, but as long as my stuff holds up, I'm happy. The damage photos are funny, the new build photos show a lot of skill and innovativeness. I have always said that dog people get very creative when it comes to housing dogs. Have you noticed a lot of our ingenuity is outlawed to try to make it harder for us to keep our dogs. I like chains but I have to say it seemed like I spent half my life at the hardware buying new parts to repair. Also if they get off, which they do, it gets messy. Now, no one can afford that. Even with a good fence they can get into so much trouble if they can get around for a while without restraint. Here they outlawed cable unless it was coated. The battle continues.

Hello I would like to suggest a website for you? The house is alittle expensive but does the job of preventing them from destroying them. It's well insulated and well built.

Hey Boogie in looking at the pics looks like the fencing in the floor is exposed through the gravel. Does this ever cause problems with your dogs feet.

  15. The first one I built I didn't put enough sections in to keep the gravel in place so I have to rake it back every 3 days or so. I've never had a probl with it when some gets exposed from time to time. It alwys gets covered back up quickly. I've since went to a bigger gravel and quit using the pea gravel. It doesn't move around as much.

Thinking of building a similar doghouse as Boogie posted, all metal strips on all edges. I realize some will bite anything but mine luckly seem to leave metal alone,
The wooden one i got is very good but it has all these space between the wood.

so they still try to destroy it, think iv put around 4 extra metal plates and strips on it to repair so far, lol.

  17. I kind of wish I had done that. Mine aren't in bad shape. It's been a couple years and they still don't need any repair, but there's a few places where they've started chewing when they are bored.
