My dog is 3 months

Hey my dog is 3 months old and i was wondering if it is too early to start makin him wear a big chain around his neck?? 5/16?? i think that's what it is...not positive but pretty close to positive..but thanks in advance...

 

Oh and only when walkin, playing etc...not all the time..im not that cruel..

 

Definately too young at 3 mo. And why the need for weight training of the neck?

 

i just want him to have a big neck to match his big head.

 

that's genetics. give him 2 yrs to fill out as this breed takes that long to mature & truly fill out. As a vet tech, I'm also telling you to wait due to the irreversible damage you could do to his spinal cord by forcing him to carry a weighted neck chain. You run the risk of your dog never being able to lift to head up or have full movement in any direction & even the possibilty of death if he causes enough damage to the vertabrae themselves. Wait (I know it's hard). Also, I personally like the weighted harnesses better than the collars as they at least distribute the weight throughout the body. If you have any more questions , please feel free to ask.

 

Where can i get one of these weighted harnesses? and also when is a good time to put it on him? what age? 2 yrs? or can i do that younger??

 

check out the internet. It's important to have a proper fit when using them, so you want to wait until he's about 1.5 yrs old in my opinion. (also won't spend a lot of money on a harness that your dog will grow out of) I don't use either since I prefer to build my dog up the natural way (exercise & nutrition). Do some research on the uses of these items. They will add muscle to your dog, but cannot affect your dogs in areas that genetics are the key determining factor...i.e. head size, neck size, body size in general. So determine exactly why you want to do this & do some research. Improper usage, too much weight, etc. can cause more harm to your dog than good. Hopefully someone who uses these things will repond to your post as well, since like I said, I do not & you can get their opinion as well. My advice is to patiently wait. He's just a pup.

 

just play with him with a shirt or rag and let him pull on that. it'll work on his neck as well as his back legs. that's what i use and it works for me.

Why are some people sooo quick to pump their dog up big and bulky. As soon as some people get their dogs they want them to just start working out. Thats like making a baby work out or something.

 

its not that i want him to be the incredible hulk or anything, i just think he's very unproportioned and i was just wonderng what u guys think...that's why i asked...im no longer considering doin this...so dont think im some cruel guy who wants his dog to be big and mean and give this breed a bad name, this is my first pit and i LOVE HIM TO DEATH...and like someone up there said..he'll probably just fill out as he gets older..so dont take this post as me being an asshole..cause im definetly not..i just dont know a lot about the breed...which is why im on this site all the time...to learn new stuff..but i really do appriciate the things i learn on here..so anyway..thanks everybody..

build him a spring pole, and play LOTS of tug. he will continually be growing for at least 2 years, these things are what i do to make sure the body grows in strength as well, remember pits arent supposed to look like arnold schwartzeneggar(sp?), but more like lance armstrong. (though i do like a tad bit of nice round fat in certain areas, cheeks, top of the head) but the rest of the body should look ropy and wiry. IMO

 

i should also state that actually right now all my dogs are kinda fat (they all gain weight in winter, less activity) lol

 

ya i have a spring pole for him, but its not one of those that are real high in the air, his two back legs touch..is this ok? i read on this site that that's how its supposed to be?

 

I personally would not work him on a spring pole yet. If you do make sure he is always supervised and I would make sure he can keep all fours on the ground. If he just can keep his hind legs on the ground he may be able to give it a good tug and then he is airbourne. This will risk back injury.

Just play with your dog for now. Tug with him because it is safer and you will build a bond with your pup rather than just watching him/her try to work a spring pole.

 

yes i should have mentioned that as well, i apologize, with his springpole, definately keep it low for now, it should basically just be a substitute tug partner right now until he grows up a bit.

 

He'll probably turn out just fine proportionately, just an akward stage. But what lines does he come down from game/ show? What do his parents/grandparents look like? They are often an indicator of what the pup will look like.

 

Well the bitch was pretty big with a small head and weighed 60 lbs, and the father was HUGE 109lbs. and he had a huge head, but the friendliest dog i've ever come across...and i have no idea what his bloodline is, i just bought it from some ppl that breed pits..its the bitches 3rd litter and i really wanted this dog..so....i dont know..they arent papered...so i dont know how i could possibly know?

 

You are right you have no way of knowing what bloodline your pup is or even if the pup is a pure APBT. I am not going to start about BYB's. Good luck with your pup and have fun with him.
