Not all that knowledgeable, just been around and paid attention along the way.
Arcidi was a beast. He was my roommates idol along with Bill Maz (cant spell his last name). Or was it Kaz.

I would guess it is on youtube or maybe some old ESPN strongest man shows. The kid from here that was on there was Johnny Perry (RIP). He finished in the top 5 or so in his first outing in South Africa I think. He had two pals that were in that 650 club. The 690 guy was like 24-25. No where near his prime.

They were always around. I use to say they would drink drain cleaner if someone told them it would make mass and strength.

I bought my first shots of juice from them and soon found there are no shortcuts in the dogs.

Good thread. Brought back some old memories.

It has been a long time. I could not remember if it were Maz or Kaz.
These cats were far from natural. I'm no weight lifter, nor performance athlete, but if I were "All Natural" would really mean something to me.
My personal best was 325 and that was the last year I was in the service. I'm incredibly weak for my size. I looked like I could lift a ton but never developed a lot of upper body strength. But it was never a focal point as a diver.

Johnny had pictures of him and Kaz together at a strongest man gathering. It was forever ago but I think that competition was in South Africa. The picture was signed "To the next great strong man"....Bill Kaz

    Good series of posts.

650 that's gnarly...my boy tank was benching close to 600 when he was like 20 but he was/is a big mofo. i know another dude when i was on vacation that was benching 535 and he only weighed 175# lol fckn crazy. i was close to 200 and i think i only hit 425...i remember being stuck at 375 for ever, then one day 385 and so on. thing is that you have to EAT and EAT. brings back memories...seen the 110 dbs take out grills mess up some big toes! lol.. taught me a lot with the dogs when i started working out.i havent went read through this thread but, all basis have been covered. i dont have much knowledge to add other than i change their diet when working them "a keep is not cheap". if your just feeding plain ol kibble then your not being fair to your animal especially these days.

Out of the service I was 6'3" 215. Hit 325 once. Dudes around me were in that 175-185 range in the 400's. Felt like a chump in comparison. LOL

The difference is the heat. If one is simply dehydrating the food and then adding water at feeding time it is the same as feeding raw.

The kibbling process with most dry foods is water removal by baking it out. Key nutrients are lost.

If there were a convenient way to dehydrate, grind up and then rehydrate that may be tge best way to feed a dog.

Raw is to incomplete and dog food isn't regulated by anyone. Human food is regulated by the FDA and much safer.

Kibble is highly processed about 2x to 3x worse than the most processed food humans eat. In a keep kibble will never be nutrient maximized because of the processes!

Most everything I feed is FDA and USDA regulated. Fast forward a month from now and the majority of the meat will be deer meat, guts, scraps, etc. I will even get several packages of frozen deer meats as some of the guys clean out the freezer.

Agreed the kibble is processed multiple times. The IAMS plant (P&G or MARS, not sure who owns the IAMS brand now) is right here in town. When they first opened we got the dog food that was rejected (bags torn, labeled incorrectly, misprints). Then they started saving it for the local dog shelters. I know a bunch of guys that work there.

I'm feeding a chicken/beef lung blend currently from a vendor that just recently moved here and a beef blend with tripe from Texas tripe. Both 1.60-1.90/lb. So I take it the health tonic stuff isn't worth a crap? I know the importance of bcaa's/eaa's in bodybuilding just seeing if that's the same with dogs.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when feeding in keep is feeding a lot of saturated fats. Saturated fats are very calorie dense and when trying to cut weight saturated fats are counter productive. Dogs respond much better to fats than humans as far as producing energy from fats. I personally only use unsaturated fats which is good for energy and a lot less calorie dense.

I use flaxseed oil because it helps with skin, hair and digestion. Digestion is important because a dog's small intestine is where nutrient absorption is at it's most crucial. Domestication and kibble is the reason why todays dogs digestive systems aren't as efficient compared to wild dog counterparts. Everything I put in a dog's mouth is all natural, never processed and already in a broken down form. Clean fuel in, nutrients absorbed more effectively and less waste. I also use extra virgin olive oil as an energy source which is very low in calories.

Another thing when feeding in keep that is the most crucial is insulin and carb sensitivity. This is the most overlooked part of canine feeding!

The tripe makes a big difference, especially if there
I agree with all of this except the flaxseed oil. Dogs do not assimilate or digest it very well. Most of it passes thru. I stopped using it some years ago.

"Flax oil is often touted as a good omega-3 source but the omega-3’s in flax oil are not in a form that dogs can incorporate in their body and so they become a very expensive substitute for vegetable oil."

    Arleigh Reynolds, DVM

There is an article regarding this called "Rendering Sense into Fat".

If one is set on using flaxseed oil or rice bran oil olive oil it is a good idea to add raw beef tripe. The tripe will break down the 'plant oils' and give the dog a better shot at assimilating.

The oils should have walked or swam at some point.

    Great post.

I like the calorie dense foods because once I start feeding the dog I am adding weight not cutting weight. In the very beginning I start cutting but after a week or so we are close and I am looking to feed up and work down.
