Depends on who you ask. Older Vets swear buy it. I have used it in conjunction with IV fluids with success.

Dex works great but it dehydrates them. for pain, I use lidocaine.

Lidocaine is a local. As well as no anti inflammatory properties. Just numbs the area for a shirt period of time.

^^^^^ I need to clarify that statement A vet pre 1976 told us fluids and dillaudid he prescribed A small dose every 12 hrs.

  6. Agree with Cynthia. I prefer Metacam as it is pain reliever as well as anti-inflammatory. Works well !!

you can use a more potent painkiller for dogs like phenylbutazone BRAND NAME: Butazolidine or often referred to as Bute. it works well, has possible side effects just like any other drug. You have to excersise caution when using it, it comes in either a tablet or an injectibal. It can be administered intravenously through the drip or directly into the vein and also intra muscularly depending on the severity of the pain. Not sure if you can get it in the US anymore, think they might have taken it off the market there due to more modern drugs having less side effects. its what we use.

^^^^^ I don't think you can get Bute If your dog is in serious pain start A drip use hydromorphone (dilaudid) it stops the pain almost instantly, BUT BE CAREFUL!! It is A strong opiate, but it also has A short half life! MAKE SURE YOU DESPENCE BY BODY WEIGHT, or else you'll overdose them! I have had to only use it twice it will keep your dog calm out of SEVER pain and relaxed!
