yeah thats what pepa tells me too.. it just pisses me of cos i wanted to dig to my own dog . amd some guys they dg to theirs when they are one years old..

man u need some patient in this lol thats why i need to get a pup real soon, so if by end ofnext year he doesnt change his way i will have a pup thats already 10 months or more and replace him.. hopefully a female.

i think i will just keep females from now on lol..

thank you bro. its very frustrating sometime to having to leave an occupied den.

the other time we also had a jack russel... but myy dog and the jacky were both useless lol

  8. Could be stating the obvious mate but was it a one holer?

  9. Blackpoison

    Blackpoison CH Dog

yeah it was, we saw the fox enter that den, the guys didnt shoot it cos they thought it was the dog.

at the start my patt and the jack russel bolted it from a set that had 3 holes fox came out and went to this den 10 meters away , tha was a one holer. when 2 dogs came out we tried them separately there and they just went in barked bit and came out..and it repeated for a while till we gave up on the 2 dogs and left.i was so pissed lol

Nice dog Bud but not looking good At 16 months he should be working:(.For him to go in and bay that means he met the fox so should of stayed never seen any good one's do this only dead one's.I did have one at about the same age that ad never seen anything go in a earth and came out but never made a sound so put in a bitch and dug a fox I showed him the fox he just sniffed it and walked away, but the next time out he went to ground never bayed and after 7 hours We dug him out and a dead fox.

If that doesn't do it nothing will. Work him with a dog that does not hesitate to engage any and all quarry

that incident happened with the jrt happened 3 months ago and 2 weeks.

and the first picture where dog is sitting it was taken 2 months and a half on a different day, where a fox was run to ground by the scent hounds and we took the dog he entered but then went out.. aafter 16 minutes we said F*** it.

so its been 2 months and a half since.

im definitely trying him again next year and getting a female pup to replace him incase.its sad cos i put a lot of time on him since he was 6 months old i took him out every week to the bush chasing hares and learning use his nose. now he learned to mark and i must say he also learned to find den him self.

i think his problem is that he doesnt try hard enough to get to his quarry, if its a tight he will dig for a bit and come out, i like a dog that will give all to try to reach his quarry. i like a dog that will keep diggin till he reaches it. perhaps not enough terrier insticts or drive and too much bull in him !! or maybe its me or he too big for the holes, dont know. but the jagdterrier bitch my friend has self entered at 4 months " my fault" and she has huge drive and she is just natural. and she started using her nose fro the FIRST day i took her out. i was amazed. top breed mate, now she is running with the hounds like she been ding it for years, so natural like a duck on water lol where as my patterdale struggled picking fights with the beagles and constantly having t put him back on lead so not to ruin the hunt or distract the hound that are tracking a fox

He was still a young dog at 13 months,But you can sit on some for ever it will not make them better dogs.Sounds like you've put a lot of time into him and he's seen a lot of game.its got nothing to do with him being big or to much bull he's just not got his hart in ground work you could work him with another dog but thats not a true worker to me.I bet you he will kill stuff above ground.

  15. Blackpoison

yeah he has no problem above ground.. a hard dog. he nailed a fox above ground already then we shot it. no problem there

At 16 months i doubt he's even matured fully in day to day life but you'd expect him to be showing a bit more than this.Maybe he'll switch-on maybe he wont? Can you afford to wait-can't you afford to wait? I think with this dog it's gonna be down to your priority's,what you need from him? Makes you gratefull for a self starter eh! I respect you for the all the good work your putting in and hope it does work out.

That's just what I thought.Ive seen a lot of dogs like your's and most are good workers above ground but never really make the grade under. Some do work to ground but are not that good and I would not feed one but at the end of the day he's your dog and it all come's down to what you want from him.

i can affford to wait, im gonna hold him till end of next year. i will give him a fair go :) and will keep trying him again and again.

what you need from him? i want him to be a diggin dog, i need him to enter an occupied earth and try very hard to reach the fox and i need him to hold the fox or bolt it, giving that he wasnt entered in a tight den, cos then its my fault.

yeah i really respect self starters..i see how valuable they are now, i never thought i would struggle with this dog, i mean he is bred very well.. ow well.

thank you for the wishes.. if i dig to him i will post pix here but dont hold ur breath lol

its not easy having a true diggin work.. gotta respect those who only bred to true diggin dogs generation after generation.. not those 5 minutes wonders as they call them lol

i hope its just that he is a late starters, i mean i have read on THL of borders starting at 3 years lol f*ck thats long lol i really respect early starters and those with hunting instincts ( will hunt with a pack, or more interested in hunting then fighting the pack)

When I was breeding pats all my dogs where gould bred all down from a long line of workers and we only bred to workers. The only dog that got bred from the line that did not work to ground was a half cross staff bitch but even she worked on top and stop ends but she produced some good earth dogs because of the line she came from.Borders are slow starters my friend bred them and did have some start around 3 but ad more that didn't start at all.But when people say they did not start till late these type do f##k all dont hunt or anything then one day bang lol.Fingers crossed for you bud but I think your floging a dead horse if you want him for earth work.
