Ever since they started banning Pit Bulls in my state I have been looking for an alternative dog. Nothing can replace a good bulldog for sure, but I've never even been around another breed I would want on my yard (except beagles maybe). Then I found these dogs. I'm not getting ready to get one or anything, but are they all like $400-$500. I'm talking unstarted pups. I just can't see ever paying that much for something fresh off the tit unless it had some outstanding proven producer parents and a nice pedigree. I've always been more into buying adult dogs, so maybe I am out of touch but you can get a fully started rabbit dog for less than that. I realize they don't have the courage or tenacity of a Patterdale but geez. Are ya'll paying that much for these dogs?

give Mr.Booth a call and offer him $50 shipped for one, a proven hunter since you dont like puppies.

@ Minor Threat- sent you a pm. Are you serious? I'm gullible at times, but that sounds too good to be true lol. PM me back with his info and I'll call him up.

Ha Ha, you got me. I didn't know who Booth was until I did a little more reading. But like I said I am gullible at times. I wasn't knocking anybody for paying that price, I was just comparing it to other hunting dogs. I mean just cuz you pay a lot to have a dog imported does not mean you have to make it back in one litter. I admit they are exceptional dogs from what I've read, but still they are just hunting dogs in my opinion- alot of people who have them say they aren't even good pets. I guess being from down here where good hunting dogs are a dime a dozen, I'm just not used to seeing them go for that much. I mean for $250 I could have my choice of a dang good hog dog, deer dog, rabbit dog, you name it. All proven hunters. Personally I think Patterdales are that high because of the attraction Pit Bull owners have to them. Not selling them short, but it's kinda like people paying hundreds of dollars for a mixed breed mutt dog because Paris Hilton or somebody was carrying one in her purse. Again, just my opinion. Not knocking anybody, I mean hell I want one too.

After re-reading my reply to Minor Threat, that is pretty funny. I'm sure some folks will get a good laugh. But I didn't know lol.

well if you can get a good working dog for 250 why even bother with a patty if they are priced to high get you a good rat terrier those lil boogers can work damn good on small game

I agree. I wasn't trying to knock anybody for actually paying that much, more just trying to see were those average prices or just inflated prices on fancy websites. $250 for a good working dog down here is about average. I mean your not gonna get a field trial champ for that kind of money, although I think field trial dogs are grossly overrated. In my experience, they are bred to compete and it has taken away from their actually working ability in a true setting. But you can get a solid, hard working dog for that or less. I had a rat terrier when I was a kid and you're right they are good dogs. I was just attracted to the Patterdales I think for the same reason a lot of other Pit Bull owners are. I am impressed by animals with that kind of drive and determination. And to be honest I have long wished they made a small version of bulldogs, never knowing they actually did lol. But anyways, there are plenty of bulldogs out there for $500 or more, but at the same time you can get some just as good for $100-$200. Just wondering if all Patterdales were that high or are there cheaper, but still quality, specimens available.

If you think 500 dollars is a bit steep?take a deep breath! I know the papers bullshit a lot,on the 22nd FEB 2009 the UK Sunday times published a feature about badger digging where they claimed a Booth dog 'Booths Bruiser 2' was sold to Barnburner Patterdales in Iowa for 10,000euro's! where do they get these figures from?

    a fabrication.
Bruiser 2 was placed in iowa to be bred because a few friends of robert's are doing some serious hunting there.
robert had already done his breedings with the dog. he wanted Bruiser 2 to be bred to some proven bitches so he can get some pups back.
the same thing dogmen have been doing for years.
it simply shows what regard robert has for the dogs and men in iowa.

its all in who you know.
the best dogs are not usually bought and sold, although in the past I've bought a few very good patterdales from randy fox, gary h, and nancy swertferger.
last month I had a pup given to me off Bruiser 2.

If Pit's were banned where I live i'd be looking out for an Olde English Bulldogge or actually a Dorset Olde Tyme because OEB's are not over here much. I do also know a person who breeds very nice AB's he has (or actually his son has) a 55lb American Bulldog who has pulled the most weight per pound in the whole of Europe :D

In Ireland Patterdale's aren't very expensive..

I don't think patterdales are that expensive- I think hounds are that cheap

I know hound guys that just don't give a fuck. they sell pups for 50-100, and would rather shoot a dog that was skunk sprayed than ride back with it.

patterdales earn more respect. Terrier guys seem to care more about their little warriors

i don't know what it's like over there, but over here you've pretty much got to know the right people or no matter what you pay you'll struggle to get a good dog.

(and when you do it won't cost a fraction of what it sounds like they're charging out there)

Hi harry, happy new year to you.How many pounds to bodyweight did your friends dog pull (just curious).I was going to suggest a patterdale to you as an alternative to a pit as some of the best lines of them in the world are in ireland and cheaper.

Pits are banned around here so I have a few Dorset Old Tyme Bulldogges, real nice dogs to have around but you woun't be doing much hunting. They do enjoy Pulling though... it seems to be second nature for them. AmBulls are real nice dogs too but I landed on the DOTB and happy with that.

  18. 100% agreed. I know people like this. I have never shot a dog. I put the time in and teach the dog what is allowed and what is not. I think when people pay 400+ for a pup they tend to care more about how it turns out and are less likely to neglect it or shoot it.
