Pitbulls as K-9 dogs

The American Pitbull Terrier's phenomenal smell, want of human praise, bravery, extreme drive and stamina are reasons why it is becoming the new breed of cop dog where they can regularly perform search and rescue, drug/explosive detection,
chasing down criminals, protection, etc. I swear I seen countless stories of these dogs having long successful careers as K-9's. I seen where a cop said the shepherds and malinois type trained dogs can cost a shit load but the pitbulls rescued or not can cost a lot less overall and be just as effective if not more. I guess I thought it was pretty cool because it shows their potential , receptiveness.

(pit) bull breeds or actually any breed or mix with the appropriate hunt drive, tenacity and trainability can be successful at scent work. the pictures/video depicted are of strictly nose dogs, not mouth dogs - so to speak. apprehension work is a different story. sure there are one or two bulldogs here and there which could be trained to track, run down and bite/fight violent criminals and terrorists for real, but there would be no consistency in the breeding, because the pit bull is not bred and tested for it over multiple generations. if i remember correctly, the jessup dogs are trained for the sport field only - not the street/combat zone. you see agencies around the world pay the big $$ for working dogs from kennels in Czech, Holland etc for consistency and reliability..otherwise those kennels would not survive.

these were just a few depicted of the pitbull k-9's I just liked that video cuz they were talking about rescues and as I said I heard from a cop who trained k-9 dogs who said pitbulls and rescued pitbulls dont cost as much to train yet still perform as good as the malinois and shepherd type dogs. I know the malinois and shepherd dogs seem to be one trick ponies, if it aint broke dont fix it they seem to do the job well no need to replace them all but pitbulls can literally do it all when trained properly they are so receptive.

don't really know how you can confidently say that every single one of these shown are strict nose dog and have done no work or training in tracking criminals/terrorists, biting/attacking violent criminals, protection etc I guess you might be a psychic maybe you can talk to gr ch zebo but I know that I literally know of several that have been deployed locally to track not only missing persons but pursuing criminals. I know pitbulls naturally love humans but with right training anything is possible with the apbt. its a stone cold fact that the US military is using and training apbt's a shit load ever so increasingly today.

and for you to say "one or two" that is extremely delusional. do you live in the USA?? you are a malinois fan I know

You'll have yo show your source for APBTs in the military. They are a banned breed on most all millitary bases. Think there was a law about it passed in like 09.

K-9's to enter the force cost around $20,000. It takes a lot of time to train them. If it's going to be a dual purpose sniffer, it will cost more. If they are not trainable for the task, they are out. Also, if a dog is a bomb sniffer, that does not mean he will be able to sniff out drugs. They used to be reward trained with a ball or a toy. Now, they do food reward.
For Navy Seal K-9's to enter the force it could cost up to $500,000.
These dogs usually go home with their handlers and retire at age 8 or 9, depending on their health.
The most common breed of dog for this type of job are the german sheppards, malinoises and labradors.

ZeboGhost - there is not a single pit bull dog working in a criminal apprehension capacity in any US government agency: local, state or federal. I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but I am not.
    --
SMD760 - nor are Rotties, or lol ‘wolf hybrids’…

Michele - most large agencies will not drop 20k on a green dog, maybe 10 on a young prospect, although it’s possible for an agency without an internal K9 certification program to spend more for a dual certified street ready dog. even gold plated organizations often get their dogs from the same sources/kennels as the PDs do at similar prices. the high cost comes internally - with extensive proofing, deploying and certifying etc by the gaining organization. German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherd for single/dual purpose. Labradors are strictly used as scent based workers.

GK1 - the dogs that I deal with come from a very large agency. They are bred at a facility not far from NYC. They are placed all over the country, once their training is done. They are trained at the facility and given to the handler at around 1 to 2 years old. They do go for 20K. They do need to get certified every 6 months so they go back to the facility with their handlers for testing. Yes, the Labs are strictly scent based dogs.

Sort of late to the party but I would doubt the pit bulls are doing hardly anything with the military, one they are banned on most bases and two, banned in a lot of the countries they would be needed for, and thirdly.....

All the tools are there to be even a better candidate than the Malinois/Sheps etc., with the exception of their selective breeding.

You simply can't change a couple hundred years in one or two breedings.

I would say there are tons of bulldogs who could be trained to sport type work such as SCH or maybe even French Ring or even K-9 Pro Sport (have not worked a dog like that since the 90's so not sure what the sport names are these days). And there are tons of Malinois and Shep and Rotts that title in sport work but yet can't be service dogs.

Sort of like tons of kids join the military (me), a lot of kids become divers (me), but only a very select few become Seals (not me, color blind)

Dogs no different. Most any dog can do scent work. The cartels put a million dollar bounty on a Beagle. But it it a world of difference between sniffing out dope and chasing down a bad guy and engaging.

Her dog Dirk was down from Uncle Bud blood.Owners told me Bud wouldn't hit anything without permissions and he was a GR CH ..Pera Silver was down from same stuff ,Uncle Bud and he has videos of his dogs interacting with other dogs.I'm sure Jessups dog Dirk same caliber. She was there the day P.P. got raided and did get some of his dogs but claimed they were all to shy for what she wanted them for.I don't know what her involvement was with the PP bust other than she was there when it went down.
