Sad to hear someone of Don Mayfield's stature call Hammonds a peddler, also ironic that Mayfield himself sold dogs, audio tapes and videos to the public, probably around the same time he was pouring scorn on Mr Hammonds.. Plenty have criticized Mayfield over the years and I wasn't comfortable with that either, IMO whether you agree with Don's comments or not, the man had no right to sit in front of a camera, script in hand and defame the reputation of another dogman for the purpose of selling a video.

I never saw enough Mayfield dogs to form an opinion really.. Met a man called J Porter had a kennel full of imported Mayfield dogs, he was close to M Dann, but never appeared to work dogs.. I did see a female he bred called Dixie and she was a good bitch. Limey Kennel's Nelis (hammonds) was also around then and produced very good dogs when crossed with Tug (patrick/carver).. Back in the 80's you could buy Nelis or Mayfield blood for cheap.. In retrospect, I might have crossed Neliis/Mayfield and gone best to best from there, think they'd have been something :)

If more people realized it takes more than one type of dogger to make it all go around the dog world would be much better off. Not everyone can condition, not everyone can breed, not everyone can race or hunt it takes all walks for real.

  18. Mayfield may have not been the best breeder of dogs, he believed, to reach the true core of gamness it required extensive inbreeding for multiple generations, maybe he was right but i believe to much inbreeding and line breeding will mess with the he mental of the dogs in other ways that could effect their abilities. However i do believe it was Earl Tudor who stated that Mayfield had some of the best conditioned dogs he’s ever come across, Mayfield new what he was talking about when it came to conditioning gamedogs.
