Mayfield was ahead of his time, so was Earl Tudor. They dominated the Bulldogs while they were active.

Mayfield was a far better conditoner than breeder most of his wining dogs were of off other yards I believe but one things for certain he could sure get them into condition! Earl Tudor bred dogs similar to Mayfield, Mayfield learned breeding from Tudor though Tudor seemed much more successful at it. Not knocking Mr. Mayfield in anyway.

For me, that's the point! Nobody here knocking Don Mayfield, but he's happily knocking the shit out of Gary Hammonds! Mayfield was 'the' conditioner of his era, but unsuccessful when it came to breeding.. Hammonds was a poor conditioner, but an excellent breeder, no problem with that? I just don't think Don should have sold his opinions of Hammonds to the public! If he'd said it to Hammonds face or in private among other dogmen, then I'd think he was entitled to his opinion! IMO Some things are better left unsaid, like when your best friends wife is ugly, spouts poison and wears clothes you can see through, but you wish you couldn't! The last thing you do is tell the world about it! That was probably a bad example :)

Never had contact with either Mayfield or Hammonds, never owned their dogs either.. I remember Mayfield got criticised a few years back over his 'purest of the pure' philosophy with regard to his dogs.. People called him deranged, said he'd smoked too much Mexican dirt weed etc.. I never liked that either! I think anyone who achieved half as much as Mayfield deserves to relax and smoke some weed, he should only be judged on his contribution to the dogs, but those principles apply equally to Gary Hammonds in my view.

  10. I totally agree.as my old nan used to say"if you can't say something nice, then don't say nothing at all! "......Mayfields video's are a bit crazy though.the magazine's he put out in the early 70s are great.(you can get them for cheap on p.d.f.download you might wanna check that out).we all change with time.and it seems like mr Mayfield did to.hell!!what will I be like if I'm still here at is age!??.a lot madder than Mayfield no doubt!!!.l.m.a.o:)):))..anyways,it seems like all the old greats have got something to say about each other.as the competition in that world is pretty ruthless.........what other old greats did you speak two Old guy back in the day?...and who influenced you and helped you the most?......just for history of course...........

How bad of a breeder was Don .? He was the original breeder of the Fitzwater Goldie / Dibo cross, arguably the best of all time.Pit General came down from this cross and many more. Now towards the end when he started chasing the purest of the pure dream it does look as if his breeding career took a turn. But even then thier was some good dogs down from that stuff to. Don knew how to breed Bulldogs .As far as his later breedings he did ,I can't call it .I never ran that blood but their is a couple breeders out there I'd for sure take some from in a minute.

Ask Danny Burton if Don could breed good dogs ? He is still alive!

With respect Bama, you missed my point! I got no interest in what Don Mayfield or Gary Hammond's bred, neither do I care about anyone's opinions on them! The title of this thread is 'Poison' by Gary J Hammond's.. I jumped into the conversation solely on the basis of Mayfield's poison towards Hammonds, that's it! Anything other than that for me is a separate debate.. If you want offer an opinion on Mayfield's breeding. then fine, but again I must say this thread is called 'poison' and based on his comments about Hammonds and others, I'd say Don Mayfield was full of it!

I'm not sure what spawned Don hatred towards Hammonds but he definitely didn't like Gary .To Gary's credit he was a hell of a breeder.Bred many many good dogs.

From talking to Don the very little I did in his old chat room, he said Gary took and bred cur dogs from several guys. I think that imo is why the dislike for his breeding.

What I have noticed is a lot of those old guys from the area of Gary say this about him. I've lso met guys who say they've gotten great dogs from Gary...it's ust a preference.

It's a competitive sport, lots of shit will be talked it's up to you to wade through and decide for yourself.

Thanks Bamaman! I appreciate you responding to what I said.. I take your point about those who are happy to own dogs from Mayfield and I acknowledge YellowJohnJocko's input over what Don said about Gary taking and breeding cur dogs from several guys! I've watched the video again (post#23) and Mayfield's exact words were that he [Gary] filled up his yard with cur dogs that had stopped in rolls.. Here are 2 dogs from Gary Hammonds breeding..

I believe the obvious question here is.. Did the dog known as Tudor's/Mayfield's Nigger quit in a roll? I wasn't there so I can't say, but it's been said he did! (maybe another debate altogether.) Whether he quit or not has little bearing over the obvious quality of his offspring, just look at the names of those who owned them! Who wouldn't have given anything to see Pit General, never mind own him? The point I'm trying to make is this! Did Don Mayfield have a right to accuse Hammonds of breeding cur dogs when the foundation of 'both their lines' appears to be the same dog known as Tudor's Nigger, who got passed between different owners because he was said to have quit in a roll?

No ,I don't think Don had the right to .As far as the Ni$$er dog quitting .Who knows .I wasn't there either. He did produce great dogs. Its a old old argument that's been hatched out many times.
