I have a 10month old puppy, he has never seemed too interested in his food. I have tried a couple of different kinds and the one he is currently on is the one he has liked the best. I put food in his dish and he will let it sit there all day. He only wants to eat before bed. The Rotti I had before would eat two meals a day where this dog won't eat meals he just empties his dish before bed only. Is there anything I should be doing or just let him eat the way he wants?? He's kind of skinny, not extremely but I would like to see him put more weight on.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

A healthy dog will never starve themselves... I know theres a ton of posts on this exact thing if you do a search in the forums for it..

since thats when he wants to eat, you can do either 2 things..only feed him then or start a schedule when u want him feed..put him in his crate (or wherever u keep him, ) and start feeding him the same time everyday..no snacks treats or feeding other times

Good luck..and do that search on the forum. Lots of good info there

Yea my 9 week old isn't a fanatic about her puppy food. She keeps eating Halo's diet dogfood. But she loves treats. It's hard to keep the dog out of the cat food and the cat out of theirs and the puppy out of Halo's and Halo out of hers.

my roommate has a 10yr old Dobe and my pit bull is much more interested in her food. i'm wondering if he is too young to feed adult food yet. When I feed him I mix adult with puppy. Should I still be giving him puppy only at 10 months or a mix or adult??

You know, nothing worse then a picky eater.....I can't stand that, it's very frustrating....I have one that is that way, and he even gets chicken on his food and still that way......

sometimes with the heat, not real interested in eating during the day....I would choose a certain time everyday, probably in the evening, put him in a crate or somewhere without distractions, put the food down, wait 20 minutes, and if he's not eating or just snacking , pick it up.....Do not offer him his dinner or anything again until the next night same time.....if he's not eating good again, after 20 minutes, pick it up, nothing until the next day, same time, same thing.....most dogs will then start eating better, they'll start to realize, hey, I better eat or it will be gone....I would not free feed him, because it sounds like he's just snacking and it's not working......

I fed my puppy at the same time everyday, 5:30 when I got home from work. I would put him in his crate for about 20 minutes. Then picked up the food and let him out in the yard. Would wait about 30-45 minutes before his walk and high activities. Now He has his food out to eat when he wants it, but usually eats around 5:30-6:00 by himself (it's when we eat dinner). I would stay away from putting things on the food (eggs, cheese, gravy) whatever to get him to eat because my mom's picky pit will not eat her dog food without the extra toppings on it.

I never feed puppy food. I have talked to a few people that are supposed to be experts in animal nutrition and they have all said that puppy food is made to speed up the dogs growth. This is supposed to be bad. I am not an expert so I can only tell you what I hear.
My dogs have done great on adult food, though.

Tommyt I was told the same thing with my rotti. The vet told us not to feed him puppy food after 6 months because his body will grow faster then his bones. I was curious if this applies to the pit bull breed as well. My rotti was 145 where my pit is only 45 pounds so I wasn't sure if that made a difference
