I know it's not very likely but looking for some old timers to part with bit of knowledge..
A bit about myself, I am 34 owned mutt's most my life but over the last year started to get a taste for real dogs the more i get the more i want guess i got the bug..
I hunt pigs for money with my dogs just looking for someone to give me few pointers on keeping the breed and any other things i should know i love my sorrells they are tough as they come i see my jeep/banjo has more brain.. Any help be appreciated...

thier is some people on the forum that can help you out for sure man..main thing i have learned is dont breed tight, keep the hybrid vigor in your dogs.Inbred to tight u loose strength and size and stamina..need all 3 on a hog sure you have realized this already though...catch dogs r bred differently for sure..but thier is people who use inbred stuff im sure..U could take 2 diff sorrell males and go into a female and linebreed the offspring.JMO all this.

 

yea why would anybody want to inbreed or line breed bulldogs? ummmmm to keeps quality traits such as strenght, wind, mouth, etc all the things a guy looks for in a bulldog. jmo and seemingly what has been done to preserve quality lines for many many many years.

 

i understand that mayday..but u still loose some of all that..not talkin about match dogs now ..bred totally different.and if u really look there..u see the battle crosses becoming more popular.

 

Breeding and hunting not what i'm looking for tips in mate i breed cross bred mutts for pigs and catch enough pigs to know what i'm doing there..Fitness,feeding and yard keeping more like what i was after...

 

well what ever u after good look to you...seeing more and more mutts get killed here in the southern states.

 

i went once didn't enjoy it that much not a real hunt 3 sides fenced in 10 acers the 4th was the river , the guy had many dogs he said his top dogs are pit bred into a hound then bred back to the hound they worked well

 

yeah i have saw all sorts of crosses work,,even saw some pure bred great danes used for catching.

 

i use 1 or 2 dogs per pig and get 14 good pigs on a average day don't think your average american doe's that.. I use dogs to multi task not just as catch dogs they need to find catch and hold.. My main pig dog is bull arab/pitbull/ridgeback second best is his father paulsen bull arab a bull arab is greyhound/bullterrier/pointer/bloodhound all my pit's smash any pig 1 out but don't let go so they don't get much work.. The more i read on the old days true bull dogs the more i want to know like what do you feed/worm and work a yard of 60 dogs.. When it comes to pigs i think my 1 dog could do the job of any 5 dog team in america...

 

and it takes all day from sun up to sun down to drive 1 property here with 3 strand wire fence and thick scrub couldn't be more favoured towards the pig

 

To each thier own for sure,,if it works all that matters.I personally prefer catch dog to be fresh when he or she is released so wouldnt use one for tracking.Not sure the size pigs we are discussing here

 

You use 1 or 2 dogs per pig.Ever lost a dog yet?5 dog american team? Most people i know use scent hounds for tracking ,and catch dog for catching.If someone has a good prooven catch dog thier not out to get it killed.But it does happen ,object is to get yourself and your dogs home safely if possible.So if you use 1 or 2 dogs per pig means you have at least 14 dogs or 28 dogs if you use 2.. since u did say 14 pigs per day.So you should have plenty experience on what to worm with and feed.

 

And man thats 14 pigs is just an average day..Whats a unaverage day like?

 

26 for the day is my best day just me and my dogs.. 43kg average is what i got this year.. biggest was 91kg dressed.. i got 2 good dogs and 6 apprentices..

 

this is my best load for this year 27 pigs only 3 sows

 

i feed twice a day raw meat and bones for breakfast and working dog biscuits with vitamins and minerals of an after noon..
Just finished off a bottle of IMAX gold horse wormer to worm the dogs and still would see the odd tape worm in the dogs i have no fleas i use spectrum 200 for fleas so fucked if i know why i got tape worm or how to get rid of it i just invested in a 5l bottle of sheep drench can't remember the name off top of my head bout found it when i googled it starts with a V comes in green bottle... I am slowly getting my yard in shape but not with out mistakes looking for some one to ask the questions thats done all the hard yards save me reading and making mistakes i know if it was that easy every one be doing it but can only try

That is a good dog he died from overheating though the other month first pig of the day just a hot day

 

my 2 best dogs big dog is the arab red dog his son out of pit/ridge bitch

 

ok so u catch that many pigs a day and use the same dogs over and over ...your pretty lucky ..I mean lucky you still got 2 good dogs,some laid back piggies over there lol.Your luck wouldnt hold that good here man.
