im very interested in using a heart monitor on my dog during conditoning to use as another tool to gauge his process. I prefer to bike my dog as he and i both enjoy it more.

can anyone point me in the direction of some good info on using a heart rate monitor on a dog? thanks

a heart rate monitor is a great tool but you really don't need one if you're only conditioning for a dog show. a monitor can be used to see how fast your dog recovers, but if you are observant you can tell just by looking at the dog. the ones I used were very tricky to get to function properly on a dog, it took alot of time, effort and tinkering to perfect it.
I would say in your case its probably more trouble than its worth.

You should be able to observe and listen to your dog and gauge how he is doing....

im not really into conformation shows but more into performance based sports. A dog with tremendous wind would help greatly.

thats what i have been doing so far, i can notice when its time to quit and when its time to step it up. the heart rate monitor is just something i find very interesting and something i would like to learn more about to perhaps use it as a tool to take it to another level in the future

e-mill is no good, bike is okay but a slatmill is the best.
if you want any help let me know.

I shave a patch on the left side of my dogs chest, and attach it with long velco strapes that will keep it firmly in place. When my dog slows to a walk I will place it on them.Carry a note book with you, note what their heart rate is at time every day. As long as his heart rate stays the same you can add work this way you wo'nt over work you dog,if it go'es over stop an do the amount time as the day be fore.

It would not be a good tool for actually doing the conditioning but would be good for recording progress. A really fit dog that isn`t working hard could have a high heart rate and an unfit dog that is working hard could have a low heart rate. So actually looking at various heart rate zones and comparing to other dogs would be a waste of time but continuously taking your own dogs heart rate and then comparing after various stages in his program what is resting heart rate is and recovery time etc will give you an idea of any improvements.
