  1. that 1200 pup just might turn out to be the next great thing then again it might be just a average dog..you take the same gamble when buying 500 dogs..it just doesnt hurt the wallet as bad when the pup doesnt turn out like you were hoping and 3/4 of the time they wont..but when they do..it pays itself off ten fold..when i would buy pups it was more then likely off of dogs i had seen with my own eyes and dogs that i saw and liked how they were..more then likely dogs not even known..not chasing pedigrees..not chasing the next up and coming dogs..but were from honest GOOD dogmen..i knew what i was spending my hard eaned money on and new roughly what to expect..if you have never seen the dog or the dogs the pups are from then you are probably buying the pups for the pedigree and in my opinion will put expectations on said pup that it will not live up too.

  2. There good and bad with every line if u work ur stock how they should be worked then u will see what ur looking for! If ur just paper breeding then by all pay the 1200$ for a well bred pup! He'll I did it dad is a r.o.m and moms is a ch. same thing with used cars....and used car dealers....the good ones are out there but patience will pay off tremendously...a lot of people that get screwed run at the "bad guys" with a fist full of money....then after the fact they find these people have screwed many...and 'everybody' all ready knew....
when i was younger i paid huge $$$$ for a brazillian mastiff...had the same paper fiasco....and with a little research i found this guy to be the biggest puppy peddler not only in his breed but maybe in dogs across the board....with research i found tons of crippled and un healthy dogs....tons of lies....i felt screwed until she grew up....instead of a show type 'home protector' i ended up with a extremely active, prey drive fila brasileiro....the drive of a bulldog...put her on hogs and she caught like a freight train....was a great defender of the home...not weak nerved displays....as good a dog as anyone would want...so in the end i got a great dog for too much money...very lucky....but from that breeder that was one in a million...its across the board in both dogs...cars...housing....etc..etc...US1

Yes they do exist and are out there... And I do agree
Taking the time to find good people with good dogs
Will be money and time well spent !

Let me give you a hypothetical here :
Lets say out minding your business paying bills
Or what have you and out of the blue your reconized
By some tom dick or harry and he tells you he knows
Who you are and knows your experience with the "dogs"
And wants to pick ypur brain and see if you could help him
Out with his dogs ? What would you do ?...

I know and have seen you give advise to total
Strangers on here so maybe its not that far of
A strech for you but I find it hard to believe that
People will be so open as to agree to help out a
Stranger right off the bat !

    Slim,

I hear what your saying and agree !
I just think that not to many people
Are willing to take a new guy under
Their wing and mentor them ...
Would like to have others on here that
    Know and have experience mentor
And help me out ? You bet ! but
Would they take the chance ? Giving
Advise over the web and swapping
Numbers and having them say call
Ill help you whenever you have questions
    Are two different things...

Im here to learn as much as I can
And theres tons of info on here
For me to take in so if I can find
People willing to help me along the
Way then thats a plus !

i have said before that i was very lucky when i became active in the dogs....i did not have to make the same mistakes that most people make....i did not have to spend $$$$ or worse yet, ruin $$$$ worth of dogs learning....i had someone who had ran with the big names of his time....beat them too....he would say do this and do not do that and i listened...
i agree it would be hard to approach someone about dogs as a stranger....Sort of like, Mr. Gotti, tell me how to start my own mob family??? just does not work that way...US1

    Slim,

    Again I agree with you...
And you are lucky to have
The mentor you have I wish
    I was as lucky ...
Fwiw Id ask joe bananno instead
Of john gotti to much flash for
My taste well mr. bananno tried
And for the most part stayed under
The radar and never had a major
Pinch ... Having read his book I have
Respect for the man and how he saw
    The world !

Which Bonnano book the last testament? just finished reading that one yesterday, it was interesting for sure the man was a realist and went about his business. Using Gotti as an example of how to be a mobster would be like looking up to Mike Vick as a dogman, maybe not the best idea....

I have been beyond blessed with the group that has put trust in me. If u show a passion to learn it'll help a lot. Don't know how many times I have heard people say they don't mess when the new generation bc they think they know it all. I think being patience, humble and motivated will get you where u wanna be.

    Dream,

I agree with you 100 % with everything you said
And yes most of the people from qoute my
Generation unquote think they do know it all !
And i'll admit I dont know it all thats why I joined
So I could learn as there is all sorts of usefull
Info here but its kind of hard to show the passion
Your talking about through a computer screen !
Even tho I do have a passion to learn ... I'll I have
To do is be humble ,motivated and patience and
Ill be on the right path and if some people decide
To help me out then thats a big plus !

Just a thought on why I might be willing to pay $1200 for a pup from kennel A and not Kennel B.
Now, sometimes Kennel A may just be all about selling puppies and Kennel B may be actively using their dogs and selling a few from the litter to finance the rest. That's all fine and good. But, when I'm looking through the Kennel B litter and all the ones that I would be interested in are not for sale,.....and what looks like the funny-eared leftovers of the litter will cost me $1200;.....while over at Kennel A,....if I'm willing to make the trip and take the time I can pick what I think is best from a whole lot of litters,.....I just might go with Kennel A. That's not to say Kennel A's picks are better than Kennel B's culls (second-tier picks),.....in fact, Kennel B's percentages might be much better. But still, human psychology is what it is

Also, about learning and mentors and what-not......patience and virtue and passion is all well and good,....but sometimes who you are, where you are and sheer luck make the difference. Hell, I can't quite remember where I met my first true mentor/connect,.....but it sure wasn't while being humble and earnest at a dog show. He wouldn't have been there. He told me straight "I don't raise no damned show dogs." I must have been talking with and being questioned by this guy for I don't kow how long when one day he suddenly invited me to come over and see this "yard video" of some dogs he kept down in the Carolinas. Guy had just moved to NY and lived in an apartment with his family,.....so I really didn't think/expect much. Well, I sat on his couch, he put on the vcr.... I got my first lesson in not judging a dog by looks alone.........and the rest is history...long past and irrelevant history. So,....for those doing the right things, as they've been told to do....or think they are....sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...and that's just the way it is...so keep ya head up and your eyes open either way.....because sometimes, real help and experience can be found in the most unlikely places and packages.....but going around to the shows with your "I want a mentor...pleassssssseeeee" t-shirt and your yard-boy application in your pocket or posting your resume to a public game-dog site probably won't help. Just saying.

    Another example of choosing kennel
A vs. kennel B is the people running
Them imo. Say kennel B has dogs that
Are active and good and they are willing
To sell what they dont keep but they are just
A pain in the rear to deal with while kennel A
Has many litters and will let you pick any pup you
Want and are good to deal with !
Which kennel would you go to ? Im not
Saying kennel A is better then kennel B
Im just saying some people get turned off
By people who make a hassle if buying their
Products example : my friend wanted to buy a rottweiler
Pup from a guy who other people told had great
Dogs so he called the guy and started asking
Question about the dogs the breeder told him this:
"listen I have two litters coming up I want a nonrefundable
Deposit of 500 and ill decide what pup you get
As my local buyers have priority over you regaurdless
Of when you pay the deposit and if you want a,health
Gaurantee til will be extra " he declined and called this
Lady with ok/good dogs whos willng to meet at
The state line and the pup comes with a two year
Health gaurantee and puppy replacement if the dogs
Hips go out by two years old !

    Highcoast,

You are right as you never know where when or why
Real help from experienced people may come so you
Got to keep your eyes and ears open and sometimes
Keeping your mouth shut will help too... I have a guy
Close by who is sometimes willing to talk and help me
Out but those times are rare ! So If I gave off a vibe of
Trying to seek out a mentor here that was not my intention
I was just playing devils advocate ! I will say as ive said
Before im here to learn as I dont know everything and
If people on here are willing to help now and then well
Ill take it as I believe one cant have too much help !

it is not as hard to find that group or person as most think...i like to use examples....if you show up on a work site on a job the first day with zero experience or knowledge the brick mason does not put you on the wall laying block/brick on his finished product...his livelihood (dogs would be a life long piece of work)...no...you get a pile of sand, some water and a wheel barrow...you keep the block layers in mortar til you work your way up...no different than the dogs....when i said i had a mentor i did not mean i showed up one day and he said let's go match a dog...i bought a dog from him...i raked as much shit on his yard as he did...i asked questions...and when i did not get the answer i was looking i understood he was holding back...so i waited and asked again later...sometimes weeks....i hauled water...i helped worm....and later i was allowed to help walk dogs...it took time....and i did not get impatient and jump the gun to the next thing coming down the road....i put in my time on another persons dogs....
the hard part about working the way up is not depending on the internet or a forum to pay the dues....it has to be in person....if there is no one you can see weekly or even monthly in person then either move if it is worth that much to you, or give up the idea and pursue a different endeavor with the dogs....it is really that simple....
a better topic maybe why can't experienced, well respected, well accomplished dogmen give out vital information on the internet so it is EASY (and EASY may be the key word for this entire thread) for all to get to the top? ...believe me, it is hard to be successful in the dogs...it was hard 50-60 years ago....it is especially hard now in these days and times....the people who are looked upon as successful both then and now had a few things in common...patience, some common sense and most of all commitment....US1

Hell no dude,........and believe me that comment wasn't meant for you at all. I find nothing wrong with speaking up and being honest about where you are....and where you wish to be....so don't even stress that. And frankly, you hold your own in any given conversation better than a lot of folks...so keep doing you. My point is, as you put it,....keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth mostly shut,...and if you're lucky and persistant,..it might happen,.....but don't stop educating yourself where and how you can while you wait.
