Soji's conditioning progress (pic heavy)

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by valkyrian_danger, Feb 5, 2009.

  1. February 2008, the day I got him @ 10 mo.s old and one pudgy fellow. I got most of the weight off of him just from a better diet and regular walks. We just started actual conditioning about two weeks ago.

(probably the worst picture of him EVER)

    nice........what a difference.

what all do you do for your conditioning/food?

how much he weigh @ 10months and how much now?

It just proves w/ a little hard work and a smart owner, all 'pit bulls' can look pretty good. (well, maybe not the 110pound/26" head/etc hippos, but most can)

He's looking good so far. . .is that a nylon rope?
Your gonna want to get cotton - the nylon wears the teeth pretty bad.

  8. For conditioning we do flirt pole, springpole (well kind of...for now, until I can afford to get all the parts, we're just hanging a rope from a tree branch :p), hand walking when I have the time, and fetch (usually on an incline). I never really time it, but I know my dog pretty well, and I can tell when he's had enough. Altogether we spend about an hour a day on conditioning, and we usually work two days, take one day off, and so on and so forth.
For food, in the morning he gets 3/4 cup of kibble (Taste of the Wild) with plain yogurt and a small handful of blueberries (for the antioxidants), around midday he gets either a whole raw egg or a beef neck bone, and at night we alternate between whole fresh sardines (guts and all) and chicken quarters.
At 10 months he weighed almost 65 pounds, a month ago he weighed 49, and now he's 59, but it's "redistributed," so to speak. :D

  9. Well, looking at most American Bullies, to me they just look...flabby. It seems to me that the breeders keep them overweight so that they keep that overdone look, although a lot of it IS structure and breeding. Those dogs that weigh 110 lbs. or whatever ridiculous number should probably weigh closer to 80 or 90. I'm willing to bet that if you got all of that excess weight off of them, they would at least look a bit better than they do now. Still not like an APBT, but definitely better. :)

  10. Thanks! Yeah it was nylon rope, just changed it today though!:o

  11. Didn't want to start another thread just to ask this...but to anyone who knows, what's a good way to build up the muscles over his back and ribcage? I'm seeing great results everywhere else, but this part has been a little slower to develop. Or am I just being impatient?:p It has been only three weeks after all.
In his 3rd week of conditioning:

Try some weight pulling to strengthen the back. Also try not to give too much sardines, too much salt. Mackerel or salmon is much better.

Fresh sardines have salt? Or does that apply to canned? The Op said fresh and guts, so I assumed they were raw fishies.

  14. Yes, they're raw fresh sardines.:) And I checked the Sodium content and it's surprisingly actually pretty low.

  15. Week 4: This is the dog that couldn't get his back feet off the ground a month ago!!! Probably doesn't look like much to some of you guys, but he's come a long way I'm proud of him! :D ALL feedback is welcome!!!

I like it alot . That is a gret job done with him . If you don't mind me asking , why couldn't he get he's feet of the ground ? I'm asking because I have a similar case , so just wanted to see how did you handle it .

It's amazing what you can do with a little TLC to a dog...He looks great now, can't wait to see him in another month or so.

  20. Well it's a long story so brace yourself, haha!:p When I got him he was so soft his muscles were almost atrophied from lack of use. He was rescued (actually basically stolen) from a yard as a very young pup by a 10 year old girl from a guy who was rumored to be a dog fighter (although there was no proof of this). He spent the next 6 months of his life confined to a tiny back yard with 20 other dogs (mom was an animal hoarder that claimed to be a "rescue"). He was then rescued from that place, loaded with parasites and malnourished, by a lady who fostered through an actual rescue. While he did get a decent diet with her, she overfed him and never exercised him, so he put on a ton of fat and no muscle mass whatsoever.
I started off slow with him, going for twice daily walks, 30 mins. per walk. A couple weeks later I started taking him with me on day hikes, and playing fetch for 15-20 mins. Since I was working fulltime at the time, that's all I had time for until a couple months ago. About a month ago I started him on a homemade flirt pole. I started with it on the ground, and just had him chase it around for a little while. He improved rapidly after that, and each time we went a little longer and had the lure a little higher off the ground. It didn't take long for him to gain the confidence in his body to jump, and within four weeks he's getting 4 ft. of ground clearance! I'm sure it varies from dog to dog, though.
