My complete idiot of a friend gave his pitbull(how he got it I don't no as we live in the uk) an anabolic steroid injection to make it buff as he said I told him it could be dangerous but he said its fine can anyone tell me the risks with them?

The risks would be similar to steroid use in people which can be bad

steroids are used to make the recovery time shorter, nothing else . but the dogs i've seen , seemed to run hot faster.nothing beats normal conditioning .oh, and you don't want pumped up muscles but muscles like steel cables for your dog.

There is no study on dosage and i think a long term dog would do better with athletic body ou're in troublenot overly muscled muscles consume energy

  7. side effects will not show up asap.. it will show up after a few years or months.. the most affected area would be the liver..

about the muscle gains, im not sure about it.. i never used it for my dog and never will..

Steroids are legal for personal use in the UK. I would imagine it's quite easy to get a hold of.

I've been told by people who have hunting dogs to inject them with steroids. Do you know what exactly he used? Different things, different risks. For example, EQ can drastically increase red blood cell count for more oxygen delivery etc. If it gets too high your blood thickens & is slower to move around.

If it was something like say winstrol, expect joint & tendon damage. Winstrol causes tendons to grow larger in size, but not stronger.

I'm pro steroid use for athletes if you know what you're doing but for animals? hell no. Its not like they can sit there and say no i dont want to take this crap.

Steroids are an owner's prerogative. The use is up to the owner. As for muscle mass, the dogs don't need them for that.

The only reason to use them is to help the dog recover quicker.

Long term usage can be dangerous, and if you want to use the dog to produce another generation of offspring, longterm use is definitely a no no.

What about the dogs hart i thought they gave humans bad harts like what's been said the dog can't tell u he is having chest pains or any other pain that is... Has it worked is he more buff ? And what about Roid rage I have seen some messed up paranoid people and they tend to flip there lid very easy now people have told me its all depends what sort of person u are if ur chilled and don't get wound up u should be fine if ur a bit firey any way then u will prob go a bit nuts so if u give it to a apbt I would imagine it would go a bit funny in the head over time and start trying to rule things maybe flip out to over silly things we will prob see ur mate on the front page of the news papers in a few weeks just adding a bit more fuel to the fire so all the anti pit fokes here in the uk can say told ya there nasty !!!!

All depends on what was given and how much was given. Used correctly steroids can improve health and well being, used incorrectly and the damage can be life threatening and irreversible.

Steroids are used medically on humans to help recover quicker from serious injuries. So done right, yes, it can help.

When you abuse steroids is when the problems start. Too much of ANYTHING is harmful. Even drinking too much water or breathing too much Oxygen can be harmful and possibly fatal.

Sorry to bump an old thread. Just had to search this on the forum to see if anyone was doing it.

As a long time steroid user I would say at the correct dosages and given time on and time off that your dog would probably not experience any major health problems but could end up useless as a stud dog. Liver damage may occur if you were using orals for a long period of time.

My view is DO NOT INJECT YOUR DOG!!! I am assuming this is being done for the owners own vanity? Also where a human can consciously notice a change in his behavior and try and correct unnecessary feelings of aggression cause you know you are on, a dog probably can't.

It's a short term fix a few lads use em for lurchers makes them run better but if you breed it'll drop weak pups in my exp.

The Top Conditioners, Handlers, in the Dog Fighting Sport have and will use Steroids. Most will deny it. A few may not, Most Do.

Some people will do anything for the WIN . I prefer to see the natural athlete winning. A good dog w/ good conditioning can win, a good dog w/ great conditioning will probably win, a great dog w/ good conditioning will most probably win, a great dog w/ great conditioning will most certainly win. The challenge is choosing or breeding a good/great dog and conditioning it to be a winner. Anything else (chemicals) in my mind is a short cut showing lack of ability and cheating yourself and the dog from becoming the best you can be.
