Sulfur and/or Lime for Fleas

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Kruger&Faydor, Jun 8, 2017.

  1. Wondering if sulfur or hydrated Lime is better against fleas. I'm not having luck with pesticides.. Despite the success I've had in previous years with these products.. I've tried
    *40% Permethrins
    *Fuse (Imidaclorpid & Fipronil) http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/fuse-termiticide-insecticide-p-8296.html
*Suspend Polyzone (Deltamethrin and supposedly photo stable for like 2 weeks and micro encapsulated to work even it rains) http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/suspend-polyzone-p-2455.html
*And I mixed Pivot 10 IGR concentrate with all of these! http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/pivot-10-igr-concentrate-p-2147.html
I have had little to no luck this year keeping away fleas. I think it has to do with all the rain we've been getting. I live in south Arkansas about 45mins from the LA line, and I don't think we've been a solid week with out rain since like Feb-March.. I bought the Suspend this year because it's supposed to be micro encapsulated and do well even in the rain, and it seemed like the Fuse wasn't working as well towards the end of last year, but I can spray a spot with it according the label, and the next day tie a clean dog there that morning and the dog will have fleas again that evening.. it's insane.

I Want to try something different... and I've heard Lime will work as will Sulfur.. I was wondering if anyone might kno which is better or if a combo of the two would be worth trying..
I know hydrated lime is said to be better for this purpose.. to dust and then wet it down..
How Much per chain spot if your dogs are on 10ft chains? Lightly dust the ground.. or cover the ground.. ?
    Help/suggestions are very welcome :)

I've been there man and its a nightmare. Good luck to you .I live in South Alabama sbout 25 miles from the Florida line. The best method I've found for flea prevention is catching the problem early when only a couple dogs are scratching. If you wait till all your dogs are scratching then you have a hot mess.We didn't have a winter here at all so I had a couple dogs I noticed scratching in like Febuary.I'm like thier is no way that's fleas! Upon closer inspection , sure enough it was.I used a product called Activyl on those 2 dogs and sprayed the yard.I did have to treat a couple more dogs with Activyl .Had to do this with 4 dogs for 3 months in a row at 17 bucks a pop.It goes between shoulder blades and only last for a month. You womt notice results over night but it will eventually get your fleas under control. Its gone be expensive for you to do this at this point because it sounds like you have a infestation at this point. In the future catch it early. It always starts with one or two dogs and this is the time to jump on it with all you got..I'm in June now and it just rained here like 11 days in a row.Fleas are under control.

17 bucks a pop per dog for 3 months just to clarify..If you got the cash I would go either comfortis or activyl or something similar that works.Make sure its a product that works if you go this route .The 2 I mentioned I know they both work but you won't see results over night. Its expensive and you may have to do it at least 3 months in a row per dog.Good luck.

  4. Thank you for the help and suggestions! Sadly this year I started spraying in February! It's sounds wild but I literally followed the rules to a tee for what you'd normally do to not have fleas. I'm usually the person ppl go to in my area to find out what's doing the trick.. but this year is unlike any I've seen. What's more weird is I have dogs that I cant find a flea on anywhere chained next to dogs that i can't get em off of! I do the same treatment for all of them! I've always noticed some dogs seemed to get em worse than others but this is just crazy. Only think I can think is maybe fleas don't like pigs. I tied a pig in a few of the summer chain spots this year to root up the ground and remove all the grass/weeds. Those spots seem to be the ones with no/less of a flea problem.

I've used comfortis before.. I usually just give it to the ones that come in the house more often. That'd be a hefty chunk for sure to buy a pill for all my hounds... I've spent a pretty penny on the Spectrum, IGR, and Permethrins I bought at the beginning of the year already.. What's in Activyl?

Does anyone know where the hydrated lime can be bought large bags? It did well in the spot I used it.. But the store only had 5lb bags.. at $4.00 plus tax... I'd need like 20 bags.. Will it kill trees? Idc about grass/plants.. but I don't want the big shade trees I have to die..

Not sure what's in Activyl , you can prob look it up online. Its not cheap.I have always had fleas like that, I mean one dog will have them and next dog over has none.Way it always works here.

Washing your dog with Borax 50 mule team kills fleas and other insects and does zero harm to your dog.

Cattle tags are like a repalant.I'm not sure if it works on fleas mor for flying insects and such.It might though. This guy has them bad , I been there before. Its pure hell bud.Been there more than once.Sometmes even doing everything right you can wind up in this situation when it comes to fleas in the South.

Don't know about lime or sulfur but salt works. I'd do your routine you're doing now but put down a bunch of salt in their spots. I get mine from HD or something, the pool salt. About 50# bags.

Any one ever try Sevin dust?. I've used it for a few years. I've never had flea issues. I put it in their bedding mixed in with the cedar. Also do the spots with it a few times a year. I also use home defense outdoor around the dogs chain spot perimeter and the perimeter of their dog house. Only time I see fleas is on other people's dogs lol. I live up north though and I'm sure it's nothing like outbreaks in southern climate.

I bet salt would work. I have always used borax which is sodium borate it does the trick well. I would put it down in chain area and also wash dog with it. I never thought of using salt over borax but maybe salt is cheaper and does the same thing. Borax is 6 bucks for 4lbs approx. all I know is borax does the job well. 23400004799.jpg

Works well, Bama, along with a regular routine using other methods. I wouldn't count on it by itself but from what I've been told it kills the larvae in the ground so it definitely helps with everything else. Like AGK said, I had never seen a flea on my dogs when I was in the city. But since moving to the country and putting my dogs in the middle of a thick wooded area, I have been battling them almost constantly. This last winter didn't get cold enough to kill them so this year should be pretty bad.

Thats the problem we are having up here in Ohio, the winter was so mild! I had to spray my yard 2 days ago, i have always battled mosquitos here but this year they started early and was in full effect within no time.
